Jimmy Howard May Be In Goal The Next Few Games

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

When a goaltender is struggling like Jimmy Howard has this season, a team’s options ordinarily would include waivers and an AHL assignment.

But the Detroit Red Wings’ options are limited. Jonathan Bernier might be out another week or so due to a lower-body injury and there isn’t much goaltending depth in the organization.

So, the Red Wings might need to start Howard Tuesday at the New York Islanders and back home on the weekend....

But the long-time Red Wings goalie’s numbers show how sideways this season has gone: Howard is 2-15-1, with a 4.10 goals-against average and .880 save percentage.

Coach Jeff Blashill said whatever Howard’s issue is, it’s not work ethic.

“I can tell you he looked great in practice (Saturday), he worked hard, I think he’s continued to work hard with (goalie coach) Jeff Salajko,” Blashill said. “He didn’t expect to play. Bernier had been injured at the end of the previous game (Friday), but we felt he was going to be all right and yesterday he seemed OK and he woke up this morning and it was way worse. So, then all the sudden Jimmy gets thrust into action.

“So, for a guy who’s trying to get to where he can get a groove going a little bit, it’s hard when you’re not expected to start. He’s like the rest of us, we got to keep digging.”

Maybe Yzerman can trade another asset for a young goalie who will play one and a half games before they lose him for nothing.

depth has Nothing to do with this decision. Logic is the reason why. We just can’t play Pickard in a losing season, it wouldnt be fair to Howard who, even if he’s been bad most of his career, has been with the Wings since 2005.

And since we are not going anywhere we have to play Howard. Right now to play Pickard would be disrespectful to Howard.

It would be different if we would play for Something….

Comrie was a band aid trade. But I don’t think Yzerman believed he would get snatched up since his numbers were very mediocre. Not sure he would have stuck around next season either but none of that matters anymore, he’s gone.

If I were Yzerman I would be scouting Arizona heavily into the offseason because they have quite the logjam at the tender position with 2 nhl goalies and 2 pretty good prospects.

No goalie in their right mind would sign with us in free agency with how horrific our defense is so the best bet would be through trade.

Um…

I mean, any goalie in their right mind could look at the amount of addition by subtraction that’s going to happen just by virtue of expiring contracts… A goalie in his right might might also look at next season’s likely top four of DeKeyser, Nemeth, Hornek and Seider and say “well, clearly the D is going to be better next year” even if Detroit doesn’t add a high-end D via free agency.

Also, “no *player who plays a position we need” in their right mind would sign with us” has been proven to be BS time and time again.

Depends what they’re options are.  There’s only 32 starting jobs in the NHL, so there’s 32 goalies right now happy with the amount of games they play, there’s a lot more out there that would love to be the primary backstop, especially if they’re blocked by another starter for the next 2-3 seasons.

I meant more high end goaltenders, my bad for not clarifying. There’s plenty of ok goalies that will come here and get peppered every night for the paycheck. But the top 3 ufa goalies this coming offseason are Holtby, Lehner, and Murray and I cant see any of them leaving the teams their with now let alone signing with us except maybe Lehner if we give him the term he wants.

Murray is an RFA, not UFA.

Markstrom then.

Anything else you want to correct? Did you check my spelling and grammar while you’re at it?

I think you’d be surprised how dollars change that mindset.  If we’re the only team to give Holtby a 5 year deal let’s say, and all other offers are 3 years….

Setting that aside, we have Bernier for another season to slosh through anyway, I’d rather see Stevie grab some young kid to take a chance on, find some team that has 2 prospects or 1 that is blocked or something, roll the dice, see if we can hit gold, if not, look again the next season for a full time starter.

Wow.

Could you attempt, in some way, to be a bigger baby about someone pointing out a mistake you made? Some people like having correct information, I’m sorry that I didn’t realize you prefer to be ignorant and incorrect.

My bad.

I’m still a bit fuzzy on the whole Comrie situation. They had a chance to re-claim him and assign him directly to the griffins and chose not to. So Saarijarvi was only worth an AHL goalie try-out?

Bernier out at least through the All-Star break.

That’s what I gathered of the situation with Comrie, could have put in a claim and sent him to GR but didn’t.
Despite having 3+ years in the system Saarijarvi fell to the bottom of the depth chart and was a healthy scratch in GR. Maybe he needed a new start, maybe he’s just a career AHLer. The decision was made that he was no longer necessary.

Would suggest that excessive term/$ is a contributor to where the Wings are presently.

Besides, they can do younger and certainly cheaper than Holtby.

Once again, KH’s “loyalty” cost them picks for Howie last year, that train has left.

Your mistaking willingness to trade with demand, and assuming a team wanted/needed a $6MM goalie at the deadline and was willing to pay for it, there was not such a team. No goalies of substance moved at the deadline, depth goalies were traded in season for peanuts.
