It’s Not A Rivalry Game Yet

Paul here for the live blog while the other blogger works at what he does and unfortunately, I had to kick RedMenace to the press box because the Wings lost the only live blog he did.

I think half of the Canadian media is at the Joe tonight, of course, following every move Daniel Alfredsson makes.

But as Red Wings fans, we have other things to follow and hopefully we will see some goals from the fellows wearing the winged wheel and the defense remains tight.

FYI, Kronwall is taking warm-ups after suffering a self-inflicted puck wound to his chin and teeth at the morning skate.  He had to see a dentist this afternoon and was considered a game time decision.

So what do you think, does Alfie get one tonight?

No matter, it is a live blog b#%$!&s

Having seen the replay of the last goal again, how is everyone blaming that on Smith?  Datsyuk and Kronwall were both closer to Spezza than Smith.

Smith pinched, left a forward to do his job, then just watched as Spezza blew by him and Datsyuk to score the goal

Datsyuk tried to block the shot, so he had his feet together; Smith was backchecking and as Mickey showed, gave the Wings 3 men back. After the shot went through Datsyuk, Smith stopped skating and let Spezza simply walk in around the recovering Datsyuk.

Kronwall was playing the other side.

Basically, Smith started gliding before the hashmarks, and that allowed Spezza to get through unmolested.

Smith was the late man back and skating the correct direction. The puck went to Smith’s side, not Kronwall’s. Pav’s skating backward watching the center lane. That was Smith’s spot to use his momentum and get the puck as he was about caught up to the play by the time the shot was released, especially after the forward peeled off toward him, #2 should’ve at least been there to disrupt the follow up shot.

Little thing I just saw:

Andersson, on the 4th line, is supposed to be banging people around on the forecheck and trying to put the fear of Howe into them.

He just skated into the zone - up to the goal line - and gave the defenseman a weak slash across the hands instead of burying him. The Senators then had an easy out.

Give me Glendening over Andersson any day.

This is where you lose me.  Kronwall takes no blame because he’s playing the other side even though he’s closer.  Yet Smith is watching the guy coming down the right wing but still should have gone after Spezza even though 2 players were closer?  So when Smith does that and Spezza gets the puck to the trailer on the right wing who scores than it’s Smith’s fault again for not staying on his man?

LOLwtf was Lashoff doing crashing the net?

If our 5/6 defensive defenseman is trying to provide offense, something is terribly wrong.

Honestly, both Datsyuk and Kronwall are skating backward, and Smith is skating forward. It takes less time and effort to simply continue busting your ass to tie up Spezza’s stick when he gets past Datsyuk than it is for Datsyuk to turn around and recover or Kronwall to do a couple of crossovers, change direction and take the man breaking through.

Not only that, but it’s likely Kronwall thought Smith would continue the backcheck and pressure Spezza since he had momentum carrying him forward.

As a follow-up, it’s much easier for Datsyuk and/or Kronwall to pick up a trailer when facing them than it is for Smith to stop his momentum, turn around, and try to skate out to wherever that player is.

So it’s like 1:30 now… that means I read the comments lamenting the Wings failures, then dread the next 1:30.

I’m pretty much done with Smith, Quincey, and Cleary.

Depends on who you ask and how much they’ve had to drink.

I’m only “worried” about 4 or 5 players… the rest are fine.
