Good for Larkin.  This time it’s not a bad idea for him to go to the Worlds, and I would imagine if he really didn’t like Blashill he may not have.  So that would seem to indicate no problems there.  And it’s a chance for him to work on his game a little more maybe.

Also, good for Nielsen getting to go back home to play there for the Worlds.  That’s got to be a thrill.

I’ll be very curious to see who signs on for both USA and Canada.

From the big names already Kane for USA and McDavid, O’Reilly and Nugent-Hopkins for Canada.

Anyone think Germany will make it to the finals with the NHL players playing this tournament?

Probably will not even make top 8. But I still cannot believe how they allowed Russia to score a shorthanded tying goal. They were 1 minute away from the biggest German victory in hockey and from the biggest upset since a Miracle on Ice.

Kronwall says he sees no reason why Zetterberg wouldn’t play next season so long as his back holds up.

Z made $7M this past season and will make $3.35M next season. Of course he is coming back next season. He wants the money and there are personal accomplishments to hit especially 1,000 points.

It’s the following year when his salary drops to a mere $1M that he has no intention of playing. Go back and look at the old interviews from a few years ago when he basically admitted to cheating the cap.
https://www.freep.com/story/sports/nhl/red-wings/2017/08/21/detroit-red-wings-henrik-zetterberg-contract/586085001/
before the Wings management got to him and made him “revise” his statement so it couldn’t be held against the team
https://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/nhl/red-wings/2017/09/14/wings-zetterberg-clarifies-report-intends-complete-contract/105598142/

The question then becomes what does the NHL do? Because at that point it is no longer a
hypothetical.

Do they let the Wings circumvent the cap system like everyone accused them of when he signed it and simply let him go on IR for a chronic back injury OR do they finally punish a team with a massive cap recapture penalty (approx $5M for two year with a retirement in summer 2019 or summer 2020)?

I personally hope for the massive cap recapture penalty, because it may be the only way to get rid of Holland at that point.

There is no way to get rid of KH at any point as long as he wants this job.

I think even without him admitting that his contract was to beat the system, the NHL wouldn’t let LTIR excuse go simply because the last 4 seasons he’s played 77, 82, 82, and 82 games. Barring a legitimate injury next season, I can’t see him using his back as an excuse. He would have to play something like 40 games and none of them after January for that to fly.

So let me get this straight, because signed Hank to a deal that was universally celebrated as trend setting, a deal that the late Ilitch applauded, and ownership then let the weasel add recapture penalties after the fact, ownership would the fire Holland…

hmmm ok

McDavid and Kane signed on because they were given the captaincy of their teams.  I wouldn’t read much into it.  It’s not a portent of more big names to come really.  The Worlds are still very irrelevant to most in North America.

Thank you Murr. The insanity of that comment was just unbelievable.
