It Just Feels Like A Tuesday

Wow. This sounds familiar, eh?

The Desert Dogs are underdogs once again.
“We’re a team that at the start of the year, nobody gave us a chance, and now probably nobody’s giving us a chance against Detroit, either, and that’s kind of what we built our identity on,” Tippett said.

That’s from yesterday’s Arizona Republic.  It could have been from last year’s Columbus Dispatch or the year before’s Tennessean.  Woe is us.  Underdogs again.  We’ve been “dis’d” all year.

God…just STFU.  Tippett sounds like Johnny Fontaine before Vito slapped him around a bit and reminded him he was born with testicles.

Play that card if you want to Johnny, but I’ve got some sour news for you Jack (Tenacious D reference).  The Wings don’t take anyone lightly. Not now. Not ever. Not at this time of year.  Especially not this year. They know better than anyone that nothing is for free, that nothing is guaranteed.  Know when they learned that?  Oh, you’re thinking January or February.  I understand.

Nope.  The hard lesson was learned the evening of 12 June, around 10pm.  It was then that the Wings were slapped in the frigging face by some harsh reality that said unless you have your very best, unless you bring it with ferocity and intensity, an inferior NHL team can beat you on any given night.  No matter the circumstances.  The Wings did not bring their best, injuries didn’t allow them to, fatigue prevented them from it, in Games 6 and 7.  And the result was an image that is hopefully seared into their brains.

This is what they need to see today, every day for the next two months.

You know Uncle Mike’s been using it.  You know he has.  We haven’t heard about it and that’s good.  Maybe it’s been a very private thing.  A quiet talk in Traverse City or right after the Olympics when everyone was back, everyone was healthy.  But by God you have to know he hasn’t let that image just slip away.  You have to know that there is hatred in that room for everything that image represents and the missed opportunity reflected in that punk’s smirk.

They couldn’t erase that gobbling grin in October or December or last month or last week.  Sidney Crosby paraded our Cup on our ice.  Their Cup….Lidstrom’s and Zetterberg’s and Homer’s and Kronwall’s.  They allowed it to happen, then they sat there and waited for him to shake hands, which he never did.  His choice. It was his moment, and they allowed him to have it because they didn’t bring what they should have in Game 7.  They have only themselves to blame.

So, Phoenix can babble on about being the underdogs and they can pander to the press about being trying to save their team and their town and oh won’t you please bring the white out and keep those nasty Wing fans away….we got it. We hear it and we’ve heard it every year.

But here’s the thing. This year it just doesn’t matter.  It doesn’t matter who the first rounder is because there is unfinished business dating back to 12 June and a little bitch carrying OUR Cup because his daddy wanted it to happen and by god it did.  And the Wings can tell themselves that.  But they know, just like we do, that if they’d given just a bit more that night, or two nights before?  The summer would have been a helluva lot better.

Two teams I’m pulling for: the obvious and someone else wearing black and gold and white.  I want that fauxing rematch.  And so do the Wings.  It has to happen because redemption is on the docket, bitches.  Phoenix and San Jose and Chicago can all push back and they’ll present some stress along the way.

But there’s an appointment in June that’s got to be kept.  Getting there is all that matters.  Erasing that June 12th obscenity is all that matters.

I’m thinking that starts tonite with a Live Blog.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
