Is There Any Reason Not To Pick Dylan Larkin As The Next Captain Of The Detroit Red Wings?

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

The Red Wings, following Henrik Zetterberg’s retirement prior to training camp, opted to go without a captain in 2018-19, naming Larkin and Frans Nielsen as rotating alternates along with permanent alternate captains Niklas Kronwall and Justin Abdelkader.

“If you look at our assistant captains, the other three are older players,” Holland said. “Ultimately, the next captain of the Detroit Red Wings is going to be somebody young.”

Holland said the only way that thinking might change is if the Red Wings land a superstar in the prime of his career in free agency who is captain material.

That’s highly unlikely.

“As we work our way to the summer and training camp, certainly (Larkin) is a legitimate candidate,” Holland said. “He plays hard. He’s a tremendous, tremendous player and he’s going to be a face of this franchise, and we need more faces of this franchise. Certainly, he would be a leading candidate to be the next captain.”

I don’t think there’s any doubt, Larkin is the team’s engine.  At this point, I don’t know who else you could possibly even consider.

Maybe the only one other candidate with any argument *at all* would be Glendening, being a heart-and-soul player like he is.  But yes, it needs to be a young guy, and at that point there’s only one option.

He seems to check all the boxes, and hes their one legitimate star player.

Maybe Joe Hicketts, since Blashill seems incapable of ever getting him off the ice.

Larkin lead the team in Penalty Minutes. I know there are lots of Captains who lead their team in Penalty Minutes but this is one area Larkin should be more careful about.
