How Bad Do They Want To Be A Hockey Player

from Nicholas J. Cotsonika of NHL.com,

They don't know when they'll play again. November? December? January?

"We'll learn who really wants to be a hockey player," general manager Steve Yzerman said Wednesday. "Guys that want to train are going to figure it out, guys that want to get better and improve are going to figure it out, and we're going to provide the resources to do that.

"The ones who truly don't are going to find way [not to], and they've got as good a reason as they're ever going to have of not being able to train right now.

"So a lot of the onus is on the kids' motivation."

This quote by Yzerman jumped out at me, too

I don’t know anything about life as a budding young
hockey talent. But I’d imagine a lot of these guys have been
accustomed to certain structures and defaults in which they’ve developed.
I’m not saying they and their families haven’t taken enormous initiative
and aren’t incredibly self-motivated.

But people in general differ in terms of what kind of environment
and structure they thrive in the most.
Some are autodidacts without a high school diploma
and some reach their full potential within a more formal,
scheduled, group environment.

It seems like the path to pro hockey at the highest levels has
become ever more expensive and specialized and professionalized
in terms of the types of resources and 24/7 focus on nutrition and training and skills
development. But this is a little bit different challenge for players and I wonder if
different personality types will, all else being equal, become a bigger variable in
how players - especially prospects - take advantage of this different environment
