Handling And Addressing The Trade Talk

02/19/2019 at 3:07pm EST

from Dana Wakiji of DetroitRedWings.com,

On Saturday, Sportsnet's Chris Johnston said on Hockey Night in Canada that the Wings had asked Nyquist if he had a list of teams for which he would consider waiving his no-trade clause.

"Maybe the deadlines you've been through, but this is a little different for me with this being the last year of my contract, going into unrestricted free agency," Nyquist said. "So it's a little different for me this year but it's part of the business. It happens to everyone."

Nyquist declined to say if he had offered the Wings any teams he'd be willing to go to.

When Nyquist missed Sunday's game against Philadelphia due to illness, some people believed that a trade was in the works. But Nyquist was, in fact, ill, missing his first game of the season and first since the 2016-17 season.

Wings coach Jeff Blashill is cognizant that this issue could be weighing on players like Nyquist as Monday's 3 p.m. deadline looms.

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

Nyquist, along with fellow pending unrestricted free agents Jimmy Howard and Nick Jensen – the top three candidates to draw interest from teams eyeing a playoff run – all fit into the Wings’ future. General manager Ken Holland has had dialogue with representatives for each player about re-signing.

The Wings don’t have an NHL-ready goaltender in their system. Howard has played well this season (.913 save percentage and 2.80 goals-against average in 41 games) and wants to finish his career with the Wings. He’ll be 35 on March 26. Unless the starting goaltender for playoff-bound team suffers a long-term injury over the coming days, it’s doubtful the Wings will get an offer that makes it worth moving Howard – think along the lines of a conditional second-round pick that becomes a first if Howard backstops the team to the conference finals.

Jensen, 28, is a good skater and reliable defender, and another guy who isn’t likely to generate a trade offer that is better than what the Wings already have in him.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
