GDT - Game #73:  Red Wings host Capitals (7:30)

DET (44-24-4) enter tonight’s tilt with WSH (36-30-6) in 5th place in the Western Conference, and Third place in the Central. NSH have overtaken 4th place in the Conference by winning 3-1 last night at ANA.  NSH and DET are tied with 92 points, but NSH owns the regulation/overtime win (ROW) tiebreaker.  The Wings have 10 games left to try to regain 4th in the West, and get home ice for at least the opening round.  Fortunately for DET, they play 7 of their remaining games at home.

The Capitals currently sit 8th in the East, but only 2 points in front of WPG and BUF.  WSH played yesterday and lost to the ‘Hawks, 5-2.

Wings need a W in the worst way.

6th place and a series with the pacific champion beats playing in the 4/5 matchup, either home or road.  Don’t be surprised if Hank needs to sit a couple days soon, or if Pav’s knee flares up, or Jimmah’s groin. Not saying they should tank it on purpose, but the more favorable matchup definately resides in the 3/6 series, even if they are on the road to start.

Thanks, Okie.

from TMR:

The Wings still have a bad memory from meeting Washington earlier this season, losing 7-1. Detroit was 5-0-0 at the time.

“They beat us like a rented Mule,” Babcock said. “I don’t know much about them right now. I haven’t looked at their two previous games. Right now it has nothing to do with our opponent, it has to do with how we’re playing.”

Poor Helm. That knee of his got bent sideways pretty good. He’s supposed to have an MRI today. Any word on whether or not it is a strain or a tear?

The Wings could really use this win.  They are 3-7 in their last ten and need to lock up that playoff spot to get it out of the way.  I’m not worried but watching the past week or two has been brutal.  The Wings have not played well.

Because it’s an EC team, I don’t care how they get the two points. Charity point makes no difference tonight. The two points for the win are all that matter. Though a ROW would help in any tiebreakers.

NyQuil to play with Datsyuk and Bertuzzi.  Lotta passing there.  He has some potential to put up points with this line compared to playing with Emmerton and Mursak.

Reminds me, need to look up Homer’s production this year, i.e., minutes played, Goals ad PP goals.  Tuck away in the back of our heads for summer, is he UFA?  Red Wings proly will offer him another contract but if Homer doesn’t at least have PP numbers his future is limited.

Just an initial check confirms what you would think about Holmstrom.  1 PP goal every 20 minutes of PP time, slightly down from previous years.

Even Strength TOI per game he is only above Emmerton among forwards who have played with the big club most of the year.  How long will the Wings keep Homer on the payroll for specializing in the PP, if PP production wanes?  Pretty soon they will want to put some younger legs that can play fast all game long.

Among forwards on the Wings he is the only one with a minus rating. 3 years ago he was +18.

Good God, enough things to think about without bringing that up, but still 5 hours until game time.

Helm 4-6 weeks, FML.

Without looking at dates we’ll probably have to get to the second round for Helm to see action again this year.

Miller, Abdelkader, keep up the same energy and presence you’ve been doing.  Eaves can step into Helm’s role.

Oh, crap.

A 4-6 week “sprain”? That sounds more like the post-surgical timeline to repair a small tear. This wouldn’t be the first time the Wings have kept silent about a surgery.

Forward Johan Franzen (back spasms) might be close to returning. Franzen will miss his second consecutive game Monday, but he expressed optimism he’d be able to skate later this week.

“Definitely improvement,” said Franzen of his condition; he had left Friday’s practice early.

I think Conner right now is more able to fill the Helm role.  Mursak hopefully has recovered his preinjury speed but doesnt have as much experience as Conner.

How much can Cleary keep going in his condition?  He’s out there a lot and seems to be on the PK a lot, really like to see him get some goals too but hard to imagine what he’s going through, literally, because I don’t know what his injury is with his knee.

It’s not as bad as the lamestream hockey press are making it out. I can’t count the number of blurbs I’ve seen over the past week from diggers stating that the current slump is a preview of life A.L. (After Lidstrom)

What those morons don’t realize is if TPH retires, there is a whole lot more dough available (on top of the pile already available) to go get the best UFA D-man available (or even the best RFA—do the Wings care about losing a few low 20’s first round picks?) . True, nobody is as good as Mr. Norris, but the team will not be as bad as they are now because TPH will be replaced with an NHL all star rather than an AHL player.

Even if a perfect storm of Stuie heading West and TPH heading back to Vasteras occurs, there will be more than enough cash on hand under the cap to have a respectable D-corps. Granted, I was among the chorus of complainers that wanted Tick Tock to do something more agressive at the deadline, but even I don’t doubt that he is the best GM in NA pro sports. And come summertime, Kenny will have the best available FA D-men Winging it to Motown.

This sounds funny coming from Eeyore, but while I will miss TPH (and forever wax nostalgic about having seen for 20 years the greatest defenseman to ever play the game glide up and down the ice wearing the Winged Wheel), I believe in The Brain Trust—-Holland, Nill, Håkan Andersson and company will take care of us.
