GDT - Game #67:  Red Wings at Flyers (7:00)

After going 2-3-1 in their past six games, DET (43-20-3) are now second in the Central Division.  Although even with STL at 89 points, the Blues own the tie-breaker, having one more regulation/overtime win.  The to-be-avoided-at-all-costs 4-5 matchup, today, would see DET opening the playoffs against NSH (2-7 match-up would be against PHX).  Things won’t be easy for the Wings tonight, in addition to JFH being sidelined, the Wings are minus two top-six forwards (Datsyuk, Bertuzzi), and half the regular blueliners (Mr. Norris Trophy, Ericsson, Kindl).

The Flyer’s will be offering no sympathy as they too are ravaged on the blueline, missing D Kimmo Timonen and Andrej Meszeros as well as forward James van Riemsdyk.  Philly are in a dogfight in the Atlantic, trying to catch PIT and avoid being caught by the Devils.  In the more bad news for the Wings department,  Ilya Bryzgalov pitched a 34 save shutout Sunday against the Caps.  Philadelphia goalie coach Jeff Reese said of Breezy’s performance:  “That was his best game as a Flyer.  There’s no question about it. It’s just a confidence thing. The environment, everything around him, he’s starting to feel more comfortable.”  Joy.

Tonight, the Flyers will retire Mark Howe’s No. 2. Howe, a Hall of Fame defenseman, spent 10 seasons with the Flyers from 1982-92 before playing his last three in the NHL in his hometown of Detroit.

It must be February, right?

The club’s injured list grew by three on Sunday, as goaltender Jimmy Howard (strained groin), forward Todd Bertuzzi (strained groin) and defenseman Jakub Kindl (upper body) joined Pavel Datsyuk (knee), Nicklas Lidstrom (bone bruise in ankle) and Jonathan Ericsson (fractured wrist) on the shelf. . .

The club recalled forward Chris Conner, defenseman Doug Janik and backup goalie Jordan Pearce Monday from the Grand Rapids Griffins. . .

The Red Wings defeated the Flyers 4-3 on Feb. 12 at Joe Louis Arena, where Philadelphia is 1-17-2, including the 1997 Cup finals, since 1988. . .

MacDonald was in goal for that game, and he’ll be in net again this time. . .

Lidstrom, Howard, Bertuzzi and Kindl all are listed as day-to-day. . .

The Flyers also are dinged up, missing defensemen Kimmo Timonen and Andrej Meszeros as well as forward James van Riemsdyk.

I commend the Wings’ approach of keeping all these guys out to get healthy.  As aggravating as it is for us fans to see all our studs kenneled, it’s best for the team to not risk further injury from a guy who is worried about his groin/ankle/knee getting dinged during the game.  Granted…a guy is ALWAYS worried about his groin getting dinged…

Plus we all get that added bonus of seeing all the kids get some time as they ripen.

Thanks, Okie!

I agree with 42Jeff.  As Babcock said yesterday after practice, the guys who are hobbled by injuries aren’t really helping much anyway, so might as well get some healthy guys out there and go play.  The young guys always bring a lot of energy and stamina.

As I said on Malik’s blog, sometimes when guys are out injured, other guys try to do too much by themselves.  If the Wings can stay patient and play their system, and keep their heads up, there’s no reason they can’t win this game.

And Breezy?  He’s got to be a little worried.  Remember when Shane Doan predicted he’s be the “best player on the ice” for that playoff series against the Wings last year?  And then the Wings swept ‘em.  Still makes me laugh.  I hope the Wings are seriously in Breezy’s head.

Keep Calm and Carry On.

And LET’S GO RED WINGS !!!!!

Yeah, and he had an .879 save percentage and 4.36 GAA.  Are you saying he WASN’T the best player on the ice?

Number 2!  Retiring Mark Howe’s number…..other than 10 years in Philly feeling like 20 anywhere else, does it really matter?  He retired as a Wing after spending some time on ice with what would come to be known as the TPH. I think he is still in the Organ-I-Zation somewhere.

Mark Howe is the Red Wings’ Chief Pro Scout.

Philly doesn’t take number retirements lightly (or thin-airedly, if you will). He’s their highest-scoring D-Man in franchise history and it’s cool that they’re honoring him with the Red Wings in town.

G’morning, Jeff.  Your GDT and cuppa Java.  A pretty damn good start to a Vegas spring day.

DET:  .674 point% (3), 3.06 G/G (5), 2.29 GA/G (4), 1.58 5-5 F/A (1), 16.9 PP% (15), 82.1 PK% (15), 32.5 S/G (5), 27.0 SA/G (3),  51.2 FO% (7).

Yeeeaaahhh, that’s gonna improve tonight.  sick

Game Notes.

Referees:
Chris Rooney (#5)
Ian Walsh (#29)

Linesmen:
Brian Murphy (#93)
Tim Nowak (#77)

With a patchwork lineup and some finally-realized injection of youth into the lineup, I think it’s another good team for the youngsters to play against.  Should be a good tilt tonight.

She doesn’t work in the mining environment like she, does she now? We always have great and typically offensive nicknames for people. Ribbing is one of the best things about this business. I happen to work at a site with a bunch of whiners but for the most part I love this industry becuase of the crap we can give each other and get away with.

Also, women have it pretty rough around here. Interesting if all other types of business are the same.
