GDT - Game #65: Red Wings host Wild (7:30)
by Jeff OKWingnut on 03/02/12 at 11:23 AM ET
Comments (26)
The Red Wings (42-19-3) skate tonight against the Wild (28-26-10) trying to avoid going winless in three straight home games for the first time in almost four months. DET will once again be playing without their leading scorer Pavel Datsyuk (knee) and captain Nicklas Lidstrom (ankle). MIN won’t have any sympathy for the Wings, as they lost their #1 net-minder, Niklas Backstrom, to injury in last night’s 5-4 S/O loss at MTL. That the Wild even managed the consolation point is a miracle, as they tallied three times in the final 3 minutes, 53 seconds to force overtime with the Canadiens. Meanwhile, the Canuck’s 2-0 win over STL, places the Wings 1st in the Central (tied with STL at 87 pts), and DET play their game in hand tonight.

Great. DET plays a bad team that will be forced to play their Not Hot goalie (Harding) in net tonight.
That of course means you can expect 40 saves form Harding and something like a 4-1 win for the Wild.
Posted by Primis on 03/02/12 at 12:51 PM ET

anyone getting the feeling that Pavel’s injury is worse than they are letting on? first it was 2 weeks now its indefinitely?
Posted by TIMMAY from Warren, Mi on 03/02/12 at 01:03 PM ET

I would call it uncertain recovery time from a minor surgery, not an injury that is worse than they said. I initially thought they were being a little too optimistic in saying he would only be out two weeks, so I would say this is more inline with reality. When he starts to feel better, he will start to skate again.

Hola, Hombre. Good to see the GDT after two days. NOW I’m ready for the game tonight.
DET: 64 GP, 42-19-3, 87 pts, (2 in Conf, 1 in Central), 202 GF, 151 GA, Last 10 7-2-1, WON 1
Can you friggin’ believe that??? 42 wins and second in the conference. Most wins in the league; second or third biggest 5-v-5 goal differential; and second seeding in the conference. Parity sucks ass.
From the Pinkys official page:
Even if Backstrom didn’t suffer an injury last night against the Canadiens, Harding probably would’ve gotten the start tonight against the Wings. He has been lights out against Detroit, going 2-0-1 in all three games against the Red Wings this season.
Still waiting on the Game Notes to see who’s calling tonight’s game, Jeff. As soon as I see it, I’ll post it.

Pavs hasn’t started skating yet, 10 days post-surgery, in what was supposed to be a 14 day recovery. Sounds like they did a lot more than clean out some debris.
As far as TPH, I always thought “deep bone bruise” was NHL-speak for slight fracture.
Like Chris and Primis, I expect Pinky to play like it’s game 7 of the Cup final and the Wings to play like it’s still early February.
Still in full Eeyore mode until Pavs and TPH are healthy; After that, it’s Happy Pony time all the way. Though Eeyore will likely return when E52 re-enters the lineup.

The folks at Down Goes Brown wrote a piece about significant dates for the rest of the hockey season. I thought this was noteworthy.
April 11 – The NHL playoffs begin.
April 12 – The NHL playoffs end for whichever team has to play the Red Wings.

No worries. We’ve got some cap space and will pick up somebody before the trade deadline to cushion the blow.

This GDT has all the signs of the proverbial Shit sandwich with the 2 nd goalie and Pavs and TPH still out. I wish Uncle Mike would give Mursak a chance on a higher line with speedier linemates being we are playing an opponent just about out of the playoff race.
Maybe this is the game where the Horse’s Ass gets out of the doghouse. Need for him, Zata, and Wally to carry this team for awhile. Especially against the bottom feeders of the West.
Thankx again for all you provide Okie
