GDT - Game #51:  Red Wings at Flames (9:00)

The Red Wings (33-16-1) open a stretch of four consecutive road games tonight against the Flames (23-21-6).  The bad news, as the “19” are all too familiar with, DET stink on the road at 13-14-0.  The good news, after this road trip, DET play 18 of their remaining 28 games at the JLA.  More good news, in the fight for the Central Division, (illustrated in more detail below) both STL and CHI each have 20 road games remaining on their schedule (CHI start an absurd 9 game road trip tonight).

Babcock on the teams road woes:  “Overall, our whole team has to be a better hockey club on the road.  We can’t hide from that. . . We have to be better in our commitment to defensive details, starting on time, and be physical in the offensive zone.  You want to get going.”

I cannot fathom what the Coach means about starting on time, can you?  The Flames can’t score, and are dead last at winning draws.  Time for DET to find the .500 mark on the road.  LGRW.

Here is an interesting bit from NHL.com,by standing:

1. Red Wings (67 points)
Record: 33-16-1
Non-shootout wins: 28
Games remaining: 32 (18 home, 14 away)
** After this 4 game road trip, DET finish with 18 of the last 28 at home.

2. Canucks (64 points)
Record: 30-15-4
Non-shootout wins: 27
Games remaining: 33 (18 home, 15 away)

3. Sharks (60 points)
Record: 27-14-6
Non-shootout wins: 21
Games remaining: 35 (16 home, 19 away)

4. Blues (65 points)
Record: 29-13-7
Non-shootout wins: 28
Games remaining: 33 (13 home, 20 away)
The majority of their remaining games are on the road, where they are just 8-10-3.

5. Predators (64 points)
Record: 30-16-4
Non-shootout wins: 27
Games remaining: 32 (15 home, 17 away)

6. Blackhawks (64 points)

Record: 29-15-6
Non-shootout wins: 25
Games remaining: 32 (12 home, 20 away)
The Blackhawks expect Toews and Sharp to return when they resume play after the break. They’ll open with a nine-game road trip that could go a long way toward determining if they are going to continue to challenge for the top spot in the Central Division.

On a personal note, I have to share two bits of terribly exciting news.
#1:
image

If I were adept at this sort of thing, you’d be able to read it.  It says, in part, that 2nd LT. Jeffery Archer, Jr. “has been awarded Combat Action Badge, for combat action, having been personally present and under direct hostile enemy fire in Afghanistan.”

I am so very proud of Junior.

- AND -
#2:
Rambo is joining the OK Natl. Guard too.  He was supposed to have already enlisted at this time, but alas, a SNAFU.  Hopefully Thursday.  Rambo will be enlisting in an ROTC like program, and will be a Cadet at Southwest Oklahoma State. He should be shipping off to basic and advanced training, 35F, Intelligence Analyst, at Fort Huachuca, AZ.

Had to share this.  I am terribly proud of my sons.

Thanks, Okie, and congratulations on your sons accomplishments. It takes a special kind of people to sign up for going in harms way, and I am grateful for them.

So, where would I find the list of Flames who will be scoring their first NHL goal tonight?

I cannot fathom what the Coach means about starting on time, can you?

Ever see them not come out ‘engaged’ in the first period, or end the first with a deficit?

Pretty sure that’s what he means by that.

Also, I think our road woes aren’t as bad as people make it seem. They are awful, yes, and very Un-Red Wing-like, sure I’ll admit that. But before you throw yourselves off the train as we cross a bridge with no water below, take this into account:

The ENTIRE league is solid at home, especially the Western Conference. Even bottom feeders have excellent home records, I think there’s only 3 teams in the West without winning records at home (Phx, LA and MIN?)....

And something else, which isn’t backed by fact or stats, fortunately, but I have a feeling the roster changes we make on the road sometimes reflect Mike/Kenny’s bargaining chips for who is a “tradeable asset.” In other words, defenseman and 3rd/4th line youngsters that don’t exactly give us our best chance of winning are iced in certain circumstances to let other GM’s know what kind of potential we have. Not saying winning is secondary, just showing a glimpse of what could be theirs.

Anyway, there’s probably no weight to that argument but I can make myself feel better about our road record any way I chose.

Thanks, Okie.  Congrats to you and the boys.

Maybe someone can help me with my math here.  We are 13-14-0 on the road, 20-2-1 at home, and have 18 of the remaining 28 at home.

Home games: 20+2+1+18 = 41 ok
Road games: 13+14+(28-18) = 37 ??

Why am I only coming up with 37 road games this season, not the 41 I expect?

Probably not the clearest statement I have ever written:

The good news, after this road trip, DET play 18 of their remaining 28 games at the JLA.

Hellz yes Jeff.

Having been AD USAF for 20+ years, there isn’t a day that I regret it.

I just got a text from my oldest son Calvin last night.  After three plus weeks of hemming and hawing about it, he went and saw a recruiter to get signed up.  He wants to be in pararescue.  The idea of being an EMT with a gun and jumping out of helicopters is terribly appealing to him.

I think he’ll do great as he’s one of those high energy 1% body fat punks that I’ve hated my whole life.  But respect the hell out of at the same time.  I don’t think my hand is only 1% body fat.  No training dates yet, but I can neither confirm nor deny that my office door was closed yesterday and tears may or not have been shed.

I think I remember you now! No, Huachuca is just down the street from me though, and right across from the Huachuca range is Sonoita, a lovely area of southern AZ. And cross the Santa Rita’s from there and you’re in Tucson, my last home where I spent 5 wonderful, glorious years at the University of Arizona.

Shouldn’t be too hard Sully.. they tether your nuts to the company area and when they finally let you go it’s pretty much Sierra Vista or nothing.  Went up to Tucson a couple times (women there are gorgeous) but you couldn’t buy alcohol within 5 miles of campus.. wtf?  Asked a hadji for directions to a bar and ended up down by the Rastafari trailer park (which was really empty shipping containers on cinder blocks).. on the way saw a tranny playing guitar on the corner, electric… never went back to Tucson after that.

I did spend probably about 2k in hotel rooms while I was there though.  It was A BLAST.  Got busted underage drinking at the poolhall on the outside of town, so don’t do that there, they look.  Ft. Huachuca Disney Land baby, miss that shit.

1. Rangers - .702
2. Bruins - .681
3. Red Wings - .670
4. Blues - .663
5. Flyers - .604

...or something like that.

Rangers scored the first goal on a rebound chance Fatso should’ve corralled for a save but he didn’t.  The goal scores and Fatso slams his catching mitt on the ice.  Good show.
