GDT - Game #46:  Red Wings at Stars (8:30)

After setting the franchise record 15th consecutive home win, the Red Wings (29-15-1) have an opportunity to take sole possession of first place in absurdly tight Central Division tonight when they visit the Stars (24-19-1).  DET have won three straight and eight of their last 11, yet still find themselves third in the Central. But as the “19” are all to aware, DET are not the road warrior.  The Wings sport a meager 11-13-0 on the road, losing five of the last eight. The Wings have given up 26 goals in those eight games while they’ve allowed only 21 in their last 15 at home.

DAL has lost three of four and is without leading scorers Jamie Benn and Mike Ribeiro.  After registering just 22 shots on goal in a 2-1 loss to Colorado on Saturday, the Stars were just as anemic in a 1-0 loss at St. Louis on Monday, also recording just 22 shots.

Central Division Standings:

4 NSH 45 26 15 4 56 +5
5 CBJ 44 12 27 5 29 -41

Crazy, the Central makes up 3 of the top five teams in the West.  They would be 1-2-3, except for the other Division leaders. NSH is 6th in Conference.

He’s Magically Delicious:

Pavel Datsyuk recorded his 700th NHL point on Monday.  But it’s the points Datsyuk has prevented opponents from getting that Mike Babcock raved about:

“He’s the best two-way player in hockey, bar none,” Babcock said. “That’s because of his commitment without the puck and his faceoffs and his strength and his battle level and all the intangible things he has beside his skill set and his vision. Those things are God-gifted, the other stuff he’s earned.”

Datsyuk has been one of the hottest players in the league the past two months, with 39 points (11 goals, 28 assists) in his past 28 games.

Hat tip to SYF for pointing out this video of Datsyuk with Keating last night:

Pavel on setting up Mule’s goal with another ridiculous pass:  “Mule yell like crazy, like he steal something.”

Priceless.

From the Dallas Morning News:

Key matchup:

Tom Wandell vs. Pavel Datsyuk or Henrik Zetterberg, pick your poison. With Mike Ribeiro and Jamie Benn out, the Stars will tackle the Wings’ legendary centers with Wandell, Adam Burish , Vernon Fiddler and Jake Dowell.

Richard Bachman is scheduled to start in goal for Dallas. He is 6-2-0 with a 2.56 GAA and .917 save percentage.

The good news is Dallas played last night and had to travel. The bad news is the abysmal road record the Wings have thus far.

Time to change the trend and fix this problem. Starting tonite.

It is nice waking up to an afterglow of Wings winning and Pavs, well anything Datsyuk.

As always, Thanks OAkie.

Bitches.

I admit I stole this idea from the Niyo column today in the Detroit News:

G/P , G, A, PTS, +/-
1   Henrik Sedin   VAN   C   46   11   41   52   +13
2   Evgeni Malkin   PIT   C   37   21   30   51   +6
3   Steven Stamkos   TBL   C   44   30   20   50   +4
4   Daniel Sedin   VAN   L   45   19   30   49   +14
5   Claude Giroux   PHI   R   39   18   31   49   +2
6   Pavel Datsyuk   DET C   44   13   36   49   +20

Tell me why Pavel Datsyuk doesn’t get more Hart chatter; 3 pts out of the scoring lead, and miles ahead in terms of +/-?

A few weeks into the season Datsyuk was at -3, I think.

Jimmy In goal again?  More than another night of glorious 2 line back handed passes, spinoramas, lightning snap shots that freeze the goalie motionless, and God finishing a blazing odd man rush, I would love to see a road game with a stifling, frustrating, defensive effort and win by slow strangulation giving up no great scoring chances.  It isn’t thrilling until the next morning when you look in the standings and see 2 more points.

The good thing about this game is that Ribero, who kills the Red Wings is out.  Unfortunately, Fiddler and Ott do the same.

The very bad thing is the fact that Howard is not starting.  Conklin was quite good in his last game, but has been less than stellar in most of the others.  Quite frankly, he scares me.  My beloved Red Wings need to find a better backup.  Hell, Ken Holland would be an improvement.

Boohoohoo.  My team has a star and he is not being hyped.  Oh my god, who cares?  You guys do realize that every team has this gripe?  “I don’t know why so and so isn’t in the conversation…..”; if a coach says it, then it is just part of their player-ego management.  But if a fan says it, or harps on it, or has a gigantic phone-in all-star balloting campaign,......it is just lame.
(Does Datsuyk really need more hype?  Cause if I hear McGuire praise him again I actually will kill myself).
I understand the nineteen’s position on the League, but you aren’t actually very far from the spotlight.

Posted by DocF on 01/17/12 at 01:20 PM ET

Doc I’ve said virtually the same thing.  Back at game 10 or 11 after the Wings had lost 5 in a row and so many were calling for massive roster dumps and how over the hill Detroit was, I said calm TF down, there is only one position that the Wings Management was massively concerned about, and it is not Bert, Datsyuk, Big Error, Zetterberg or any of those, it is back up goalie.

Since then Jimmy has started 45 of a possible 40 games just because they are wholly unsettled about team play with Conks out there.  Very good last 50 minutes against Chicago, but I believe my observation is still correct.

If they could pick up a top 6 forward by the end of February great, but I think number 2 goalie is still what theyre looking for.

Babs wants a top 6 forward, who doesn’t?  Shane Doan would be great for the playoffs, even at 35 could be a good addition.  Radim Vrbata and his 23 goals?

Doan is $4.5M and a UFA after this Stanley Cup run.  Vrbata is a flat $3.0M for this year PLUS 2 more full seasons.  Both have no movement contracts. Wings have a lot of promising young forwards, none are 25 goal scorers right now, however.

Needs more study.  Braintrust working on it in Vegas next week.  Feb 27 deadline.

Yeah, and his time in Detroit has shown that those three teams were wrong, not that they can dust off some “trash”.

Finding a decent number 2 goalie should not in any way impact the fact that they need a top 6 forward.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome: wphoulihan@gmail.com
