GDT - WCSF Game 1: Red Wings (0-0) at ‘Hawks (0-0) 8:00

How CHI got here:

W  2-1 (OT), W 5-2, L 2-3 (OT), W 3-0, W 5-1 - - - apparently, by laying waste to Minny (see below).

In the first round, a few prognisticators gave the Wings a chance.  Not so in round 2, everybody and their dog have the 'Hawks winning this series (oh, just stop looking in the mirror); statistically you can readily see why.  Little brother are a freaking machine.  But, as some of you remember (all too horribly well), the machine doesn't always win.

The Wings are playing with house money this series - - and maybe that'll give them a chance.  If so, Jimmah will have to be amazing, and some of the skaters will have to play - - at least to expectations, if not outta their minds.

The 'Hawks are rusty and under pressure - - the Wings steal game 1.

Coach Mike Babcock wasn't prepared to reveal his plans for the fourth line. In Game 7 vs. Anaheim, Samuelsson, Todd Bertuzzi and Patrick Eaves took shifts there with Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg, who double-shifted.

“I've decided, but I'm not going to tell you until tomorrow, because I'll wait and see what happens,'' Babcock said. "We got some guys bumped, so we'll make that decision at our skate tomorrow.'' . . .

Here are the lines they used:

Johan Franzen-Pavel Datsyuk-Justin Abdelkader

Valtteri Filppula-Henrik Zetterberg-Daniel Cleary

Gustav Nyquist-Joakim Andersson-Damien Brunner

Todd Bertuzzi--Cory Emmerton/Mikael Samuelsson-Patrick Eaves

Jordin Tootoo worked in on the fourth line. Drew Miller, who's hoping to return in the series, and Darren Helm, who has been ruled out of the series, also skated and will travel to Chicago.

The defense remains the same:

Niklas Kronwall-Jonathan Ericsson

Kyle Quincey-Brendan Smith

Carlo Colaiacovo-Jakub Kindl

Ian White (scratched)

Jimmy Howard

I honestly do not expect to win…I just hope we are not going to loose face every game. I see it as a great opportunity for the kids and also for Jimmy. I see this series as dying with honor…. I want them to win of course, but we have to bit realistic…

That being said…..I hope I am proven wrong!

Not as optimistic this round, but I certainly think the Wings can win.  Though, I do find it funny reading some of the so called prognosticators that have their reason the Hawks will win is because Toews and Kane will play much better, and with as good as the rest of the Hawks played first round Detroit will have no chance.  So apparently it’s a given that while Toews and Kane play better, no one on the Hawks will play worse this series.

Glad to see Abdelkader getting his due in here, finally.

I wrote in here after last playoffs and in the summer that the Wings considered him a core buiding block every bit as much as Helm and that he would paid nearly as much as Helm.  Early in the season I said he was on the edge of knocking in some goals once he got a couple of bounces and was a good complement to Datsyuk when moved to that line.  I certainly was not about to enter into a long argument with the avalanche of hate and bewilderment I learned to skim over.

His success, and the vision and understanding of line building and matching by Babcock is something we can learn from, but some of us won’t because, well, hey we know more about how the team would work best against another team’s lines because we’ve seen some games half the ice at a time over TV or internet stream.  Painful, yet comical to read.

Like you said we are playing with house money.  There is no pressure on our team.  Go out there and win one in Chicago, that’s all we need.

The team will need to play error free hockey as the Hawks are hard enough to keep off the board anyway.  They’ve got more talented goal scoring in their first two lines than we do plus their third line with Stalberg seems to have put up a lot of points on us.  Our fourth line is patchwork and some haven’t been trusted to play more than 6:00.  That puts a lot of effort onto Datsyuk and Z when they have to double shift.

And, hands down their D is much deeper and solid than ours.

Top to bottom they’re much more talented.

That said, we’ve played them well 3/4 games and are playing better now than back then.  I expect us to win some games and make it a series.

Get in their faces, forecheck hard and don’t make it easy for them by being passive.

I hope Babcock has those lines skating so that he can pull the old switcharoo on Chicago like he did against Anaheim.  splitting up Datsyuk and Zetterberg worked in game 7, but I don’t think it’s wise to keep things that way.

All those years we chased and clung to the Presidents Trophy rolling into the playoffs….hooo boy!..nothing can stop us.  I seem to recall we picked up some guy named Marion cause he thought Wings were a lock and….. then there was the rest of the story.  We are living rent free in Lil Bro’s head right now.  Tonight is the one to steal.

Red Wings Season finishing first or second in conference
1994-1995 Prez Trophy. Swept in SCF.
1995-1996 Prez Trophy. Lost in WCF.
2000-2001 2nd in WC. Lost in first round.

2001-2002 Prez Trophy. Won the Cup.

2002-2003 2nd in WC. Swept in first round.
2003-2004 Prez Trophy. Lost in 2nd round.
2005-2006 Prez Trophy. Lost in 1st round.
2006-2007 Lost Prez Trophy on tiebreaker, 1st in WC. Lost in WCF.

2007-2008 Prez Trophy. Won the Cup.

2008-2009 2nd in WC. Lost SCF.

During the playoff streak, the Wings have finished first or second in conference TEN times and won the Cup only two of those times. Three times they’ve been eliminated in the first round; once they lost in the second round.

In the seven seasons since the lockout, the Prez Trophy winner has: lost in the 1st round four times, lost in the CF once, lost in the SCF once and won the Cup just once.

We have paid our dues to the Hockey Gods and then some. Whore mouth now shutting.
