GDT - WCQF Game 5: Red Wings (2-2) at Ducks (2-2) 10:00

One way or the other, DET will be playing again at the JLA on Friday.  And for one team or the other, Fridays game will be an elimination game.

It'd be better if ANA was facing elimination.  But, considering as neither team has managed to put together back-to-back wins, that'll be challenging.

Hey, Jeff, just wanted to say thanks for these posts. Wish me luck finding a Red Wings feed in Nashville for the rest of the series.

Packed my “19” sweater, just to represent and annoy. Might try to find tickets to a Nashville playoff game. OH, SNAP.

Never mind.

A while back, right around the time Jimmy signed his deal, I posted about how having expensive goalies is rarely a sign of success in today’s NHL.

At this point in the playoffs the teams with the more expensive goalies are 11-19 and the only series in which the more expensive goalies are leading is the Boston-Toronto series where Rask et al are making 4.3 while Reimer et all are making around 2.5.

In addition to that, 9 of the top 19 teams in terms of goalie cap hits didn’t even make the playoffs.

I hope Detroit bucks the trend, but right now their soon-to-be 5+ million dollar goalie is sporting a 2.82 and a .900.

Good morning, Okie, and thanks!

I don’t know why, but I’m feeling optimistic this morning.  I believe the Wings can do this, and will! I remember after the DuhUcks scored that first goal the other night, seeing them on the bench all smiling and cocky.  Well, they lost and they just can’t be feeling all that sure of themselves for tonight.

Kronner may not have any points in the last four games, but he had a huge statement hit in the last game. The crowd chanting, “You got Kronwalled,” was epic.

LET’S GO RED WINGS !!!!!

Few thoughts:
-Ken holland said years ago he’d rather have an inexpensive goalie and build a solid defense and forward corp in front of the goalie.  He obviously changed his mind.
-I would love to see tootoo in the lineup tonight. Not sure what Sammy or even Cleary bring over this guy.
-Nervous about tonight’s game, I just don’t understand why Quincey is still in this lineup over moguls like Coli, and White.

what is cheaper…

- one cheap player and 6-8 expensive players

OR

- one expensive player and 6-8 cheap players

??

the cap world changes everything.

One more thing.

For as much as we complain about the red wings and how frustrated we all get, it could be worse. We could be the Canucks and just get swept by the sharks, and bitch about the officiating the whole series.

To play gm for a moment I’d do this.
Top 2 forward lines get big dollars
Bottom 2 forward lines for cheap
Top 4 defense big dollars
Bottom 2 defense for cheap
Goalie for cheap

you can’t have 10 “big dollar” players on the team in a cap world any more.  I think the league is back to how it was in the 80s where you have one mega line, and then lines 2-4 are “meh”

Something tells me we wont see Fleury again unless the Pens make it to the 2nd round, which I think they do as soon as Vokoun jumps in there… didn’t he put together some good games as NSHs goalie against us in playoffs awhile back???

And as we all know, those records are solely on the goalies themselves.  The way the goalies’ teammates play and the way their opponents play have no bearing on the games at all.  It’s all about the goalie.  rolleyes

Well, just speaking in general, but I cannot for the life of me understand how a team would sign a goalie for longer than 5 years in any situation. They seem to have relatively short career peaks (excluding Brodeur) and more often than naught you see these lengthy contracts crippling both parties (See: DiPietro / Luongo).

Also take for instance the Philly debacle. Also consider Mason who was Calder material, but is now riding the pine. One minute you have the best goalie in the world, and the next he’s a backup. Are there any goalies who have consistently finished in the top stats for extended periods of time like we see with star skaters?

It just seems like such a volatile position for organizations to handle.

To add: I would consider Jimmah all the more valuable if he could hold consistent play like we’ve seen through his contract. He’s been great, but not head-spin michael jackson great imo.

I totally agree. My issue with Howard’s term wasn’t the dollar amount, but the span. Luongo, Miller and both Masons were the bees knees less than 5 years ago. Today they’re dogfood.

True, but you can’t simply dismiss it.

Part of paying big money to the goalie is that you end up having less money to pay for the people in front of him.

yup, and you’re looking squarely at your forwards and defense who are playing in front of said expensive goalie.

The point of paying big money to a goalie is that you don’t have to have the three forwards and two defensemen on the ice also playing goalie.

I’m not dismissing win/loss, but by itself win/loss doesn’t tell the whole story.  Win/loss does mean something, but only in context with what actually happened in those games, which HD didn’t include or possibly even consider in his original post.  You can’t just look at win/loss and make a correct conclusion about anything.  Yes, chances are if a goalie has a good win/loss record it’s because he’s playing well but that win/loss record can’t tell you that for certain on its own.

That’s only 19 players. I’d like to see a back up goalie. And an extra D and forward. No cap space for them. And that’s still only 22. Most teams carry 23
