GDT - WCQF Game 4: Red Wings (1-2) host Ducks (2-1) 8:00

1-3, 5-4, 0-4.

Granted, three games isn't the biggest sample.  5 goals = win, 1 goal and 0 goals = loss. If 5 is the outlier, DET are in really deep trouble. A 2.00 G/G average won't win many contests.  DET finished the season averaging only 2.54 G/G (20) - - scoring woes have plagued DET all year, that is nothing too shocking.

It was DET's defense that carried the Wings this season, 2.29 GA/G (5).  The Wings defense is being shredded right now to the tune of 3.67 GA/G.  It seems that ANA own the damn puck in the DET end.

I think it was Mandingo that said something like, if DET are to win, they'll have to play a perfect game - - so far, they have been anything but that.  Game 3 was a shit sandwich for damn near everyone.

Hard times, bitches.  LGRW

Hey, I just jimmied the door on the Hasek.  Voox is asleep behind the bar, mumbling to himself, and there’s a guy in a Brazilian soccer shirt snoring in one of the lounge chairs.

But we’re open for business, people!

I’ll state the obvious. We only need to score 1 goal more than our opponent to win. Our offensive prowess has been nill this season.

On the bright side, we did put up 5 goals in game 2 so it can be done. But, this is the playoffs, and, more often than not, the playoffs are not high scoring affairs. The entire Team must play their best hockey at this time of year.

That puts the onus on our goaltender. James Tiberus Fuching Howard. He has got to be our best player. Period.

Thanks OKie.

Bitches.

Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!

I agree with Kate.  JTFH hasn’t exactly been the playoff beast he needs to be.  Rookie mistakes will be made.  Jimmah is not a rookie.

Perry has killed us historically along with Selanne and Getzlaf who already are in this series thus far. Lets hope Perry doesn’t wake up.
Maybe we need another Pavel fight against that jerk Perry to inspire this team to victory tonight.

Some trivia:

Dating back to the 1983-84 season, Steve Yzerman’s first year with the club, the Red Wings have qualified for the post season 27 out 29 seasons.

There were 21 teams in the league in 1983-84, including the Hartford Whalers, the Quebec Nordiques, the Minnesota North Stars, and the original Winnipeg Jets.

I walked in the door Saturday night just in time to see Brooooner get pantsed by Getzlaf and proceeded to shut the tube off when they scored the 3rd goal.
I’ll be late to the party again tonight and expecting a different result when I flip on the tube.

They seem to be rather injury prone.  The coach has to use strategies that are preventive.  In fact, the Caps have taken a page out the Wings book, with respect to Green, eg.

That’s just a judicious, more media- and fan-friendly way of saying “they’re better than we are.” Which is fine. What else is he going to say after all?

I have to think the Wings will play their best game of the series tonight, but I honestly don’t see this series coming back to the Joe. All 4 Ducks lines have been better than all 4 Wings lines, and so have their D and goaltending. This series isn’t as close as it looks, and it doesn’t even look that close.

A little sunshine for ya on Monday morning…

Ding, I don’t think it’s media-friendly Bs at all.  It’s the truth.  Red Wings aren’t engaging physically.  Doesn’t help that when we do they suspend our players.  Abby was making himself hard to play against.

Everyone else, with the exception of Gustav Fuching Nyquist, just shies away from the physicality.  Gus is out there standign up for HIMSELF talkin’ smack when it needs talking.  Everyone else has been mum out there.  Especially Howard.

Did anyone else see Howards Flail back into the net when he got hit,t hen realized it was his own players stick and pop back up.  It was hilarious, even Perry skated by laughing at him.

And Filpulla still hasn’t finished a check that I’ve seen.

We are definitely easy to play against, that’s why other teams beat the shit out of us when they need a win against us.  This isn’t the type of team that’d ever have a line brawl, that’s for sure.  So we just take the abuse, game after game.

Nashville did this EXACT same thing to us last year.  Ducks are probably just watching old tape.

Khan has the lowdown from the morning skate - - better be ready to hit the deck if you are going to the game tonight:

Looks like no changes on defense. Lashoff in again, White and Colaiacocvo still out. . .

Samuelsson confirmed he is starting game on line with Datsyuk and Zetterberg. . .

Bertuzzi said he thinks he is in, which means he is in. . .

Wings skated with these lines: 40-13-37, 93-51-11, 14-63-24, 17-25-44, 22 working in on 4th line. 8 and 20 also skated, but not 43

Man, one game.  What a difference one game makes.  After Game 2 a lot of you were getting cocky and arrogant again.  1 game later everyone’s holding the toaster over their bathwater.

I’m disappointed but not giving up yet.  Do you know why?

ANA has sucked this series.  It’s the truth.  Until ANA shows me that they’re taking it into another gear I have no plans on throwing in the towel, because DET could easily come back tonight, drop 5 on them again, and we’d all be sitting here bewildered.

It became a 5-game series, and ANA took Game 1.  Let’s see where the New Game 2 goes.

exactly, Primis.  so many go from “we’re gonna crush them” to “EEEEEYYYYOOOORRREEEE” on a dime.  it’s funny to watch.

first game in Anaheim, the Wings were nervous.  even Babcock said they were playing nervous, nobody wanted the puck.  game 2 was completely different.

then first game in Detroit - remember, first HOME playoff game for a lot of them - and they were nervous again.  tonight hopefully they’ll understand the shift in attitude they took into game 2, and do the same tonight.  if they get a little going early, the crowd will be rocking.  that should energize and calm them.

Going to be even harder now without Justin.  Expecting Sammy or Bert to step up to game speed is a tall order, but has to be done.  Playing a good team without 2 of our best regular season players is tough and the odds are against them.  Stranger things have happened.

I don’t disagree.  I’ve been very mellow this time around though, it’s been hard to go so far up and so far down with this team.  My expectations were tempered from the get-go, even aside from post-lockout orneriness and lingering hard feelings.

Here’s the thing though:  This team is never going to engage the STFU Switch because they simply don’t have one.  They also are never really going to be completely out of it, because they still have too much talent to be out of it against a mediocre team like ANA.

If they lose tonight it likely indicates they’re out of options and it’ll be very difficult form there.  If they win though, without Abdelkader and DeKeyser on the ice, it similarly will make a statement the other way.

I’m just waiting to see what the statement tonight is.

I think this was just an awkward year, injuries on top of a roster transition on an identity-seeking team.

the strides Nyquist, Brunner, DeKeyser, Abdelkader, and Lashoff took are enormous IMO.  next year with (hopefully) healthy Bertuzzi and Helm…should be a very, very competitive team.

add a fortuitous free agent signing here and there in the off season, and we could go from squeaking into the 7th spot this season to fighting Chicago for the top spot again.
