GDT - Game 38: Red Wings (18-14-5) at Avalanche (12-20-4) 9:00

A horrible 2nd period at PHX, in which the Wings all appeared to drink the dumbass during the first intermission, earn DET a 4-2 loss against the Dogs.  The Wings dumbassery keeps them in 7th place in conference, but mired very near the bottom of the POS, with only 3 points seperating them from 12th.

In more ordinary times a game against the worst team in the league, that'd be the 12-20-4 'Dique, would encourage some confidence of a win. These aren't ordinary times, we are doomed.

Last I heard cats were disappearing all over the ITDeuce neighborhood as he tries to shake the game-wrecker mojo.

DET desperately need a win.  Don 't turn around (oh oh), Der Kommisar is in town tonight, and will be on the ice.

Looking forward to seeing DeKeyser too, but let’s be honest…..this is not a playoff team. I sure hope there’s a different look to this lineup next year. I don’t blame KH for standing pat at the deadline. Why overpay for something when you aren’t a serious contender? I do blame him for not doing much for the past 4-5 years and letting this team get stale. They couldn’t even beat a Yotes team that was literally puking in buckets last night. I would assume they beat the Avs tonight, but who knows.

Kindl has been atrocious for at least a week now, Smith, especially on the PP looks completely out of place, and Colaiacovo has been ‘meh.’  But Quincey, White and a kid in his debut don’t exactly instill confidence after last night’s complete lack of effort.

I was pissed off yesterday because Time Warner erroneously shut off our Internet access and I couldn’t watch the game (or do much else, for that matter).

Watched it this morning at work, and it turns out they did me a favor, so… um… thanks Time Warner Cable for being a bunch of dickbags?

Meh.

Won’t make this LB or Sunday’s due to an “emergency” trip to the beach, so have fun, and keep it shiny side up.

Instead of saying “Just win,” I’m going to go with “Just do something on the ice that makes it look like you care.” Gotta keep expectations low, you know.

Wings may lead the league in sudden, gargantuan lapses in defensive responsibility that have resulted in a significant percentage of their total goals allowed.

At any rate, I’ve placed Detroit in the Not Hot group, just out of spite if not actually deserved, which it is.

A look at places 3 - 13 only.

Archie Bell and the Drells song, “Do The Tighten Up”, circa 1968.

( If you need a laugh after last night, and who doesn’t, you must check out the Tighten Up video )

Red Wings have frittered away the small cushion they built up when winning 5 road games.  St Louis is virtually ahead of them for 7th place as they still carry 2 games in hand.

Edmonton and BJs lie just 1 game behind.  Remarkably, Yotes now only 3 points behind.

Yesterday I plotted a zone of 6 points the Wings could be in come Sunday night after these 3 games in 4 nights.  They got 0/2 last night so the top 2 points on the chart are now out of play.

Thanks for the Peloton of Suck update, Bill.

To use another cycling term, the Wings will soon be OTB (off the back) if they’re not careful. Though playing the Lanterne Rouge (another cycling term meaning last place) tonight should help.

If anyone is looking for pre-game entertainment before Sunday’s tilt against St. Lose, Paris-Roubaix is on NBCSN starting at 8am EDT. If you’ve never watched a bike race, I highly recommend it. The race is 160 miles long. The winner usually finishes in under 6 hours and averages over 27mph. The race is nicknamed the Hell of the North because 25 of the last 80 miles are on cobblestones.

Sorry, got carried away with the bike shit. As always, thanks for the GDT, Okie.

The game last night was so important for us; the game tonight would’ve earned us a little more real estate in the Conference standings and more importantly, confidence in their play.

Just get thetwo points, Wings.  Also, I won’t be in the LB tonight again due to family in town from CA, who incidentally are from SJ.  Gonna be hearing crap all night.

This is a better quality video of the same Archie Bell and the Drells performance.

You have to love the matching pastel blue suits and white shoes, the dance steps, and the borderline pyschadelic shirts of the musicians.  I’m sure they had a follow up song titled “I Just Can’t Stop Dancin”, which sounded exactly like “Do the Tighten Up”.

The coordinated dance moves were evolved from Do-Wap groups of the late 50’s and early 60’s, still common in the heyday of Motown with groups like The Four Tops and The Temptations, but by 1968 had nearly disappeared in the wake of the giant chasm in rock music caused by The Beatles’ Sergeant Pepper album.

But that was like 40 decades ago!

You have got to be kidding.  If that’s the actual -25 miles of- road they must be masochists.  Well if they’re biking a 180 mile race that’s not even a question.

Hope they have some serious gel pads in their gloves and ass-chaps.

Dennis do you have a GPS speedometer / map device?  I’ve recently bought a road/touring bike but the spring weather here hasn’t cooperated, persistent spitting rain and 45 degrees many days.  I try to do 5 or 6 miles after work to toughen up my ass and build some tone in my legs.  If I can confer with a local group to identify some reasonably safe routes I’d like to do some longer one-day routes in the summer, maybe 30-50 miles, depends if I can get in shape this spring.  A speedometer/odometer would be another accessory I would want to get.

40 decades ago I biked with the former German exchange student from my high school, from Eugene through Crater Lake and out to Crescent City and down the coast to Fortuna - Arcata.  It was a killer as I didn’t know the mechanics of extending my legs far enough, plus we had heavy loads from our VW Beetle that had died in Yellowstone Park.  My knees got sore as we did 500 miles up and down the Cascades, including sea level to 8500’ Crater Lake.

Just stupid, and we could not intake enough calories.  Looking back it seems like fun, but it was also physically painful and mentally extremely tough, but “over the next mountain” was the only way to make progress, and nobody was going to do it for us.

Believe that Archie got drafted by US, went to Nam & by the time he came back, the moment had passed for him.  Too bad, he might have been a contender.  Just like the Wings, if they ever learned to Tighten It Up, Now.  Maybe they could play that song when they are doing their pre-game routine.

That’s interesting, I didn’t know that.  Like many groups, their second ” original song ”  sounds almost like their first.  Speaking of sound-alikes, Jan and Dean were first a Do-Wop group, then were introduced to Brian Wilson and their course was forever changed.  Brian performed on many of their songs although the media made them out to be rivals of The Beach Boys.  One of them was nearly killed and suffered permanent injuries within a block or so of the place believed to be the inspiration for “Deadman’s Curve”, at the time a hard right turn and sharp downhill on west Sunset Blvd.

Good Lord, someone please shoot me now.

This was too good not to share… my 11 year old went on a field trip to an art museum. Part of the trip to the museum included a summary report on the trip. I about pissed my pants when I pulled this out his report from “take home folder” from school last night. Amazingly enough he got a 10 out of 10 on the report and a “good point” comment from his teacher.
“I didn’t like the art museum because we didn’t get to see anything, we just saw like 20 paintings out of the 200 there. What I really didn’t like was that our group spent the whole time til lunch making stupid little booklets for nothing. And no you should not take the 4th graders next year. The only part I did like was the bus ride back. And half of that stuff I could do. Some of those paintings are bad”.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome: wphoulihan@gmail.com
