GDT - Game 17: Red Wings (7-6-3) host Blue Jackets (4-10-2) 7:30

CBJ are in the lead for the Seth Jones Sweepstakes; at 4-10-2, they own the worst record in the league.  The Blue Jackets are 1-6 on the road this season, thier lone road win coming on opening night at NSH.

The Notion that Kronner has been trying to cover for his line mate is a big steamy pile of dung. For the most part, Lashoff has been his partner.. And well.. He’s played a gazillion times better than Kronner.

The turnovers, giveaways and over inability to transition from the back end through neutral ice

DET are playing way too much hockey in the wrong end of the rink - - ^^^ and that is why.

E52 seems to be the only guy on the back end who is capable of springing a forward free, but those long stretch passes can be as dangerous as not.

Murshak on the ice tonight.  Two seasons ago dropped into the line up as an exciting young player with skating speed rivaling Helm.

Earned a spot in the starting rotation to begin last season then lost it due to injury.

We sure need some Helm-type energy, but assuming he has regained his speed does not mean that he brings the same things as Helm.  We do need quick and persistent nemesis forechecking.

I wish him success, not long ago he looked like the next lock to be added to forward and now he is probably on the outside of Tatar, Nyquist, and Andersson.  Sammy stays injured?  Keeps giving someone like Murzschak an opportunity to prove himself invaluable and irreplaceable.  Tough row to hoe though.

At times Howard shows remarkable athleticism and makes highlight reel saves…but he’s still prone to letting in a bad goal a game which can not happen in the playoffs

Something just occurred to me: if this was 1999 or so, couldn’t we replace the word “Howard” with “Osgood” in the above sentence and it would still make sense?

If so, is that what we have with Jimmy Howard: this generation’s Chris Osgood?

If so, god help us all.

Yes, I know Oz won a Cup. But Oz, overall, succeeded because of the team in front of him.

See St. Louis and Long Island for further references.

Osgood got the Boo’s and the Islanders to the playoffs 3 out of the 4 years he wasn’t wearing a Winged Wheel.

I’m having a hard time believing we’re blaming this on Jimmy considering we all knew his numbers were going to go to shit this season.

Cleary-Datsyuk-Abdelkader
Tatar-Andersson-Mursak

I just don’t get Bab’s insistence on promoting vets over kids.  Why not switch Dats and Anders so you have a 2nd line of Tatar-Datsyuk-Mursak and a 3rd line of Cleary-Andersson-Abdelkader?  You then have a potentially lethal combo on the 2nd line and a strong 3rd line.  It certainly couldn’t hurt.

It certainly wasn’t the teams in front of him that accomplished that all by themselves.  However that interferes with the narrative that Osgood wasn’t a good goalie.  That same logic will probably keep Osgood out of the Hall also.

I never said Osgood wasn’t a good goalie. He was a good goalie, but there it ends. He got the Blues and Isles to the playoffs, where he won 4 of 12 games in two years for the Blues, and won 3 of 7 games in one year for the Isles. His playoff stats with those teams is 7 -12.

But with a team like the Wings in front of him he won the Cup.

And, a lack of reasoning isn’t what will keep Chris Osgood from the Hall; the fact he is not a Hall of Fame goaltender is the reason he will not get in, which, in the end, kinda’ makes sense.

Red, by your logic, “But with a team like the Wings in front of him he won the Cup”, any goalie would have won the Cup.  Which makes me wonder why Cujo didn’t win one here or Ranford or Dom not winning more.  And yet people want Cujo in the hall or Richter for that matter.  All Osgood did was win.  In fact he bailed out Dom’s and the team’s ass in ‘08 after falling behind 0-2 to the Nucks.  Sorry but we shall have to agree to disagree.

Chris Osgood has his name on the Stanley Cup 3 times. 2 of the 3 he went out and won. Yes, he had talent in front of him, but, not one other player on the roster that played in front of Ozzie played goaltender.

Like Quake said, Cujo, Ranford, or anyone else(Hasek) that played between the pipes during the last 20 years or so can not make the same statement. Ozzie has some HOF stats.

Member of the Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings – 1997, 1998, 2008 (starting goaltender in 1998 and 2008)
2 time winner of the William M. Jennings Trophy (shared with Mike Vernon – 1996), (shared with Dominik Hasek – 2008)
Is currently 10th all-time in wins by an NHL goaltender
  Played in
      1996 NHL All-Star Game
2008 NHL All-Star Game (Named starter by Red Wings and Western Conference head coach Mike Babcock)
Named to the 1997 NHL All-Star Game but was unable to attend because of an injury.
Named to NHL Second All-Star Team after 1995–96 season
Named to WHL East Second All-Star Team after 1990–91 season
Led NHL in GAA in 2008 (regular season 2.09 & playoffs 1.55)
Led NHL in Wins in 1996
Scored a goal vs. Hartford Whalers, March 6, 1996.
First goaltender since Terry Sawchuk to win Stanley Cups ten years or more apart as a starter (Sawchuk in 1955 and 1967)
Became only the 10th goaltender in NHL history to achieve 400 wins on Dec 27th 2010 in a 4–3 overtime win against the Colorado Avalanche
4th all time NHL leader in win percentage (53.9%)
7th best Goals Against Average (career) of all time (2.49)

Oz will always be looked down on as a good goalie on great Wings teams…. he still got it done and has his name on the Cup a few times.

I agree with the thoughts on Datsyuk centering Cleary and Abdelkader. Your basically asking Datsyuk to do it all with that line. He’s capable of it and the forecheck that Cleary and Abby can provide when on their game would compliment him but with some snipers like Tatar and Mursak he would be much more lethal. When I saw the top line of Brunner, Z and Flip was I the only one who said “finally!” That should have been a line from the start of the season.
