GDT - Game 1:  Red Wings at Blues (8:00)

Your Detroyet Red Wings return to the ice for the first time in almost nine months; thanks to a ridiculous lockout and a first round playoff exit (a 4 games to 1 shellacking by the Predators of all teams).  Many prognosticators expect a similar result for this shortened season, the Wings will squeek into the playoffs and maybe win one round (although there are a few writers out there suggesting DET will not make the playoffs at all); and with good reason.

To be blunt, DET's blueline is highly suspect.  DET are attempting to replace the departure of Lidstrom and Stuart with Brendan Smith and Carlo Coca Cola, it just doesn't add up - - there simply isn't any rational comparison there.  Uncle Mike, at this moment has Kronwall and E-52 as the top pair; then Quincey and the rookie, Smith as the 2nd pair, with Whitey and Coca-Cola as the third pair.  Terrifying comes to mind, Lord knows what is running through Jimmah's mind.

So, if DET are to win, they are going to have to score like it was the early 80's.  The Wings do have some nice depth up front.  But they are betting (hoping/praying) that Mule decides that he wants to play more than once in a while, which is why I (and a few others much smarter than me) have guessed the brain-trust have him penciled in to take Homer's spot on the #1 PP unit.  Tom Renney has been put in charge of DET's miserable excuse for a  PP (which in the final 51 games last year, saw DET go a mind-boggling 20-of-168 chances (11.9 percent).

It'll be a fascinating, and likely bumpy ride.  LGRW

Welcome back Okiejeff.  It’s been a long time.  Did anyone remember to throw some coal into the boiler on the Hasek?

Personally, I don’t think Franzen has the cahones to take Homer’s place.

This season totally depends on whether & how fast Ericsson, Smith & Kindle can reach their potentials.

All aboard the train…Datsyuk’s homebrew vodka is served!

So, if DET are to win, they are going to have to score like it was the early 80’s.

And hope that they are facing the type of defense played in the early 80’s, since that may be what the Wings are offering on “D”.

Good Mornin’ Bitches! Clicking on to A2Y and seeing GDT is such a great way to start the day.
It’s great to have all the imaginary friends(yes, we are real. Unlike college football.) together again. I can only imagine what the Chief will put out here today.

Thanks Okie.

Thanks, bitches, and Paul too.

The GDT is going to be a little shaky as I try the figure out the Emperor’s new server/software - - its difficult for this old dog to keep up.

Posted by w2j2 on 01/19/13 at 08:50 AM ET

I’m not counting on that, not at all.

GDT with Okie….ahhhhhhh back in the comfort zone. Now all I need is to see Voox’ smiling face behind the bar in the Hasek.  Many thanks Jeff! (Love the avatar)

11.9 percent power play?  That’s a good number….for measuring body fat.  Time to roll with the changes, no TPH, Tootoo?, Coca Cola buckle up and let teh game begin.

Sometime back early early last season after the Blues beat us I said they were for Realzies, and Hitchcock had stamped his identity on them.

Here’s a reminder of what they did.

“The success was built on the foundation of 15 shutouts and a 1.78 goals-against average.
Halak played 46 games, posted six shutouts and a 1.97 GAA. Elliott played 38 games, with nine shutouts and a league-leading 1.56 GAA. His .940 save percentage also led the league.
While their teammates allowed the fewest shots in the league, they were the best puck-stopping tandem going.”

A 1.78 team GAA, and fewest shots allowed.

They apparently have most everyone returning.  How quickly will they settle in to last year’s cohesion?  Maybe never, maybe from the first shift.  Hitchcock has had stingy defenses everywhere he has coached.

Enter a Wings’ team full of patchwork groins and concussions and an abundance of grinding 3rd and 4th liners, except without the best 3rd / 4th line player on our roster, as Helm will be out.

Ready. Set. Vomit.

Doubtless to say that if we lose, or fall behind by the first goal, every one will throw in the towel for the season.
