For Real Or Just A Mirage

Too early for this kind of talk for me.  Depth will be tested which could be the downfall for the Wings.  If they remain healthy, who knows?

from Michael Traikos of the National Post,

Detroit

Record: 3-2-1, third place in the Atlantic

Why it’s for real: While most had picked the Red Wings to finish near the bottom of the standings, early Calder Trophy favourites Lucas Raymond (four goals in six games) and Moritz Seider (five assists) are further proof that GM Steve Yzerman knows how to rebuild a hockey team faster than most thought possible.

Why it’s a mirage: The goaltending is a bit of a mess. Detroit allowed seven goals to Tampa and six to Montreal, which is averaging the fewest of any team in the NHL this year.

Crazy he and dubois back together again.  Looks like they still have that chemistry.

Nice goal by Svech. I really hope he does well in Winnipeg.

Almost as though Svech can score when he’s got teammates who can set him up.

But hey - defense is more important.

I think as teams study the tapes on our new players and new tactics by Tanguay its going to get harder to score. The early success…. It might be a mirage.

It’s not a mirage imo but they’re going to have to learn how to win games they shouldn’t.  We’re still growing.  I definitely don’t feel like this is a flash in the pan, running on adrenaline type play.  We’re actually getting good and have a good amount of talent with seider and Raymond in the lineup.  We’re not winning division yet, still a lot of polish needed.  But this team is definitely the real deal.  If they keep working, they’re the real deal.

Nice seeing Svech get on the scoresheet and a positive sign that 6 games in he’s still on the roster. Hope he keeps it up.

As for real vs. mirage….they’re much improved, but won’t hold the spot they’re in for long. Health/depth backfill is going to be an issue sooner or later. Have already seen Raymond take a couple hits he needs to learn to avoid if he’s going to stay in the lineup, and i expect him and Seider to struggle a little as the NHL season wears on. It doesn’t help them in the draft, but i think this team can finish somewhere amongst the mediocre non-playoff teams and lottery teams. Finishing in the low 20’s is worst case scenario pick-wise, but could help with confidence if they’re not eliminated from playoff contention in January.

Patrick Williams of TheAHL with a nice look at Joe Veleno and Jonatan Berggren.  It’s long.

That’s a pretty spot-on assessment.

It would be a mirage if they didn’t have talent and they were somehow squeaking out wins. But almost more important than talent, Yzerman has drafted and signed a group of players who have a strong work ethic and a burning desire to win (unlike someone like Mantha). It’s what makes them so much fun to watch on most nights.

I got a friend of mine in Detroit, who’s been a casual hockey fan, to promise me he’d watch the first two games this year. Now he’s watching every game. He even calls during games all excited and wanting to know who particular players are. His calls usually end with something like “These guys are so much fun.” I tell him to send a thank you note to Steve Yzerman.
