First time in leage history a team without one of the 7 worst records will get the first overall pick.  Go figure its when detroit has the worst record.  3 years in a row weve dropped 2 or more with the top 5 worst record.  The fact I get 6 months before I get to see my team play and half a decade before theyre competitive infuriates me.

That’s just silly. I expected Ottawa or Detroit to get this.

Not only do many of the “Play In” teams have no business getting an opportunity to play for the Cup, but now one of them is likely to be rewarded with a MacKinnon level winger. That’s simply not right.

Leave it to the NHL not to properly set up that lottery in any way to boot. No player available to comment. Even the commissioner Gary isn’t around. This league just insists in shooting itself in the foot. No media coverage… Classic bush league!

Commiserations Red Wing fans. It’s a dumb and unfair system, but picking fourth will likely land you a solid building block. I hope you guys land Drysdale. He’ll be amazing next to your big German playing 27 minutes a night.

Oh, and 2021 is still a deep draft too.

If this is how much simple, sustained statistical
chance can either repeatedly gift or undermine a
rebuilding team, then the structural constraints around
which that chance has its way are poorly designed.

One could scarcely do worse if a few insiders really did
intentionally game things to favor and disfavor certain franchises.

For as bad as Detroit was, they did not tank in any classic sense.
They didn’t wildly mortgage their future to be slightly less bad
in the short-term, but they did not sell every asset and aim for the bottom
as some recent teams who were richly rewarded for such plans have done.

A team with by far the worst record having the single most likely odds of drafting
in the lowest possible position, fourth, is ridiculous. Letting a bunch of teams into the playoffs and also allowing them a chance at top picks is ridiculous.

I really have a dislike for unsubstantiated conspiracy theories, and I’m not saying anything “funny” took place, however I watched a tape of the lottery drawing with yours and mine favorite midget commissioner.

After a long and droning read of the rules of the proceedings by lil Gary, a set of pingpong balls is opened. There were clearly two identical black cases that appeared to have locks or some type of deal to secure the contents.

The person assisting proceeds to lift the top case move it aside and then opened the bottom case. The top case was never opened??? The balls from the bottom case we’re then loaded into the machine.

You can watch the video on the NHL site for yourself.

I’m not claiming any funny business, but what was the point of two presumably identical (or were they ????) balls.

Ok, I’m off to watch a rerun of the X-Files ohh

I have always wondered why in the H this bingo ball drawing is not done LIVE on worldwide TV and inter web.  Every fan can download the drawing combinations, the 4-number combinations, from the NHL ahead of time.  It would be great suspense and one of the most interesting things the NHL has done in some time.

Fans around the world would be following in great anticipation as they draw out ball by ball and compare it to their team, or use the sequence list to see which teams are still in it.  Like watching a live lottery drawing for $300,000,000.

But no, the NHL does the drawing in secrecy and then promotes a Reveal show. Yuk. Wasted opportunity for real excitement for the fans.
