Does Libor Sulak Have A Shot To Make Detroit’s Roster?

from Arthur J. Regner of the Wings' website,

Unlike previous seasons, Detroit coach Jeff Blashill isn't hesitant to commit to a youngster over a veteran, especially if the competition is a toss-up when the Wings break camp in early October.

One name Wings fans should pay close attention to during the preseason is 24-year-old Czech defenseman Libor Sulak, who has emerged as a dark horse candidate to be patrolling the Wings' blueline once the regular season gets underway on October 4 at Little Caesars Arena against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Signed as a free agent to a two-year entry-level contract on May 24, 2017, the 6-foot-2, 207-pound left-shooting defenseman has impressed Detroit's hierarchy with his intelligence, his solid two-way play, his mobility and his knack for creating offensively.

I was really impressed by his play when I saw him at the Worlds. Hard shot, surprisingly quick, and willing to mix it up physically. He didn’t make too many friends when he played against the U.S. My depth chart right now would be Hicketts, Sulak, Hronek, Cholowski.

In seeing him play some last pre-season, I liked his physical play. This is something the wings need (along with many other things on the back end).

I don’t so much recall his mobility, or shot, but he HAS TO BE more mobile than #55….. confused

Sulak is or may be a 24 year old rookie, I would much prefer trading for Justin Faulk who is 26 and should play in his 500th game before Christmas. If you think a homegrown Defenseman shouldn’t see the ice until they’re 24, you need to acquire them not draft them. You need to rebuild your D by trading picks for players who are younger than 27.
