Does Joe Veleno Have A Shot To Make The Wings Roster?

from Max Bultman of The Athletic,

So while the presence of Dylan Larkin, Frans Nielsen, Valtteri Filppula and Luke Glendening makes Veleno’s odds of doing the same rather long, his tournament so far is showing promise in perhaps the two areas he most needs to as he states his case.

It also surely can’t hurt that he has spent so much time this summer around Detroit, where Veleno mentioned closely watching Larkin’s willingness to learn and take extra reps. Matter of fact, you could probably count Larkin as another source of inspiration for a player making an unexpected push to the roster in his second season as a Red Wings prospect. (Although making a habit of comparing anyone to the Red Wings’ best player is a dangerous road to go down.)

For now, though, most of that is still hypothetical.

What’s concrete: Veleno is playing responsibly, shooting quick and scoring in bunches. If he can keep that up, he’ll at least give himself a shot.

from the Traverse City Record-Eagle,

Filip Zadina hasn’t changed his mind.

The 2018 sixth overall pick felt he was ready to be a part of the Detroit Red Wings full time last year.

After spending the majority of the season with the Grand Rapids Griffins, Zadina got his shot with the parent club and now he wants to stay there.

Zadina played 59 games with the Griffins, totaling 35 points (16 goals, 19 assists). He got the call up for nine games last season and tallied three points.

Now the 19-year-old is back at the NHL Prospect Tournament and feels his experience will make this year’s journey a different story.

“I have been here so it should be easier, I know what I am going through now so it is more fun,” Zadina said. “I want to enjoy the time here with the boys, play good hockey and get some good results from the tournament.”

Does limiting Valeno to 9 or fewer games come into play like with Zadina??

I mean, if he plays more than 9 games, that in essence burns his first year toward his free agency status…no??

Would the Wings then need to protect him in the expansion draft??

Man I hate all the minutia involved with the NHL now.

I remember a time when hockey was about hockey and not bean counters and pencil pushers…. sick

If I am reading the rules correctly I don’t think Valeno will be under the same restriction as Zadina. If Zadina had played 10+ games last year he would have started his professional seasons played clock and by the time the expansion draft came around he would have played more than 2 professional seasons and eligible for exposure. I think both Zadina and Valeno can play all 82 games this year and still be exempt from exposure.

Per the expansion rules:

All players who have accrued two or less professional seasons at the end of the 2020-21 season, as well as all unsigned draft choices appearing on the teams reserve list, will be exempt from the upcoming expansion draft.

So I think Valeno won’t have to worry about the games played this year.

If the kids are good enough play them with the big team. Wings have enough dead weight that can get exposed in the expansion draft. But if you’re only going to give any kid 4th line minutes then let them play in GR.

With the abundance of fourth liners the wings have, I would assume if someone like Veleno or Zadina makes the team they aren’t going to be playing fourth line minutes.

Let’s see how these guys look during preseason, but right now, I think he’s more than ready to compete for that spot.
