Detroit’s Defense

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

So here is a projected look at next season’s defensemen:

Who’s back

Alex Biega: Acquired in an early season trade from Vancouver as a fringe player, Biega was playing on what can be considered their top pairing (with Patrik Nemeth) toward the end of the season because of the progress he made.

Danny DeKeyser: Limited to eight games due to a back issue that required surgery, he will be back as a top-pair defenseman at the start of next season.

Filip Hronek: A building block who emerged as the Red Wings’ top offensive threat (nine goals, 31 points) and minutes leader (23:53) on the blue line in his second season.

Patrik Nemeth: He assumed a bigger role than expected, averaging a career-high 22 minutes, and often playing against top lines. He was the team’s most consistent defender.

Who won’t be back

Trevor Daley: Plagued by several injuries the past two seasons, he will be 37 in October and might retire.

So on a real team they have 2x #3’s (DD & Hronek), a #4 (Nemeth), and a #7 (Biega). With Hronek having potential to be a #2 (if he can learn to carry over his play to a whole season not just a half).

And they want to bring in another #3 or #4 while regulating their prospects to the minors. But in order to do so they will need to extend the term and overpay.

F(orget smile that!

Play the kids and let them learn not like the stands are going to be filled. Let them make the mistakes and learn….especially since an AHL season is in serious jeopardy anyways as it depends on butts in seats and that might not be possible or greatly reduced if it is.

Lindstrom & Cholowski for sure….and Seider if he no longer qualifies for the ELC slide because of a special year of service agreement between the NHLPA and the NHL in order to allow an expanded roster. Otherwise hold off on Seider. and bring up Jared McIsaac as he’s no longer eligible for the slide.

Olde Ansar kinda stayed away from the third rail….Coaching.  I wonder what Gerard Gallant is doing, eh?

Who are they going to learn from if the best the Wings have is a couple #3s? Not having higher-end talent to lead the way is going to result in a long, long, long, long, long rebuild.

They might be able to overpay in the short-term for a veteran who could guide the kids. As a bonus that veteran might be flipped for draft picks.

They are still at the point where they are trying to identify the future top pair. At least now they have a couple of candidates.

Still so many question marks and the issues with the AHL, international leagues and CMJHL will certainly play a role.
