DeKeyser Watch: Tick Tock Makes His Move

Well, it's not like Mike Ilitch flying to a farm in Walnut Grove, but it's an effort.

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Detroit Red Wings are making their final pitch this week to prized free-agent defenseman Danny DeKeyser.

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland traveled from Phoenix to Toronto to meet with the representatives of the former Western Michigan University star.

DeKeyser is expected to weigh numerous offers and make his decision by Friday.

More from Khan(!) here.

More from me here: if Holland doesn't land this kid, a Wing fan from Michigan?  Nothing short of failure.  Graham Hathaway agrees.

The money will be the same wherever he goes, since the 23-year-old is limited to an NHL entry-level contract (two years for a player his age). His decision will be based on opportunity, where he believes he will get a chance to play right away.

La la la la la la la, can’t hear you, Khan.  La la la la la.

The Griffins would love to put him on the roster for the next 4 years.

Don’t forget he’s 23 years old - this isn’t a Brendan-Smith-stay-with-the-Griffs-forever redux situation. By the sounds of it, and with the demand around the League, this kid is “overripe” already.

They’d be smart to give him the ice-time.  Get him in while the identity is being formed, let him be a part of this group.

Hoffman posted something about the Rangers possibly using someone like Ian White with his right handed shot, PP guy.

Do what you gotta do to get a building block piece.  No brainer.

Don’t forget.  The Wings also have Sproul, Ouellet, NiCastro, Almquist, Backman, and Marshall (whom I believe is gonna surprise the shit outta all of us) in the pipeline as well.

Should’ve finished that thought:  the point being, is that I agree with HTO.  He’s a building block with Lashoff, Smith, and Kindl with Kronner and E52 the head of the defensemen for the Wings.  Homegrown defense corps.

and the kid in the KHL (Marchenkov?). I long for another Russian defenseman in a Wings sweater.

So was Justin Schultz and Detroit wouldn’t guarantee him playing time.

Justin Schultz signed with the Oilers in June of 2012.

The Red Wings at that time had.. other plans.

Not to mention that Detroit likes to draft offensive guys and teach them defense in our system.  Shultz was all offense, needs work on his D.  Smith is the same way but miles ahead of the curve in that area, his hockey IQ works going both ways.

Da Kasier though, is already defensively oriented and more ready to step into that role.  and his size is such that it shouldn’t hold him back or prevent him from competing with other men.

Iginla MAY not be dressed to play tonight against the Dives.  Lots of unconfirmed tweets from Bob MacKenzie and Nick Kypreos seem to appear that he’s headed to BOS.  If he does and he stays in BOS, that’s gonna suck because we’re in the same division as BOS next season.

And Joe Haggerty (@HackswithHaggs) just confirmed that Iginla’s not in the lineup tonight against the Dives.  He says, “People in Boston are going to wet themselves…”  Ewww…

“There’s just somethin’ about him, somethin’ ‘round the eyes…”

Is it mandatory Boston gets every power-forward available at the deadline?  I’m sure we’ll see Clowe to Boston in the next day or two.

Not sure about that, but watching the Bs and Habs in Boston right now, I’m convinced that there are different rules for Boston on the ice.

Just to back up a day, the entire McCarty Vernon LaPointe Shanahan beat down of Colorado from March 26 1997 can be seen at this link.  I’ve been trying to find the entire game for a long time, this dude posted it up in the summer of 2012.

Mr. Cold Shower says we have had one of the lowest GAA the last month, a few times the goalies have had to stand on their head.  There may be some risk to trying to inject a new body into what is right now a pretty good functioning defense.

Then again we’re used to plugging in new bodies all year, almost every night a new line up, so it’s something we could pull off.

But seriously, no big failure if he decides to play elsewhere.  When you’re 23 and the world comes calling why not go somewhere new?  No one would blame him, well, Wings fans would, but rational people wouldn’t.

Well, no matter where he plans next season he’ll be going to 29 new places.

These unsigned players from the NCAA are many times diamonds in the rough. They don’t need to mature in the AHL as much as young CHL prospects; their significant potential to not adapt is the length of the NHL schedule, which plays itself out eventually, but isn’t an issue in the spring.

if I were in DeKeyser’s position, I’d be milking the “offers” and courtship too.  let them all come and roll out the red carpet, one by one…even though I made my decision where to play when I was 8.
