Come To Poppa

The Detroit Red Wings have been in the Western Conference for like, I don't know, 30 years. Something like that.  The specifics escape me and most of you know the weight I give facts, anyway.

Well, there are a few--facts, that is--that I like to fall back on. They help me sleep.  They make me feel warm, almost like the Speed Racer footy pajamas I wore my freshman (and only) year at Northern Michigan.

One of those facts is this: the West has belonged to the Wings.  It is ours.  We own it.  I can say "we" because "we" have filled the western arenas. Every game. Every time Detroit's in town.  You've raised prices.  You've whined. You've written letters. And we still...kept...coming.

And the Wings, themselves, have dominated this conference.  Ruled it.  We are, literally, the "arch rival" of every team in the conference. They despise you, the 19.  And they fear them, the Wings.

The Western Conference has been Detroit's bitch from the jump.

And, if it's all the same to you, I'd be pleased as piss-laced punch if we leave on the same arrogant note.

Oh, it's going to be hard.  The Detroit Red Wings have not faced a playoff opponent so heavily favored since the Oilers in the 80's and Philly in '97.

And that will make it so much sweeter.  The Western Conference has belonged to the Detroit Red Wings because Baby Jesus decreed it.  He's not changing his stance now.

Bet against us.  Do it.  I like this team.  I like our chances.  And I like watching Joel Quenneville defecate himself.  I intend to see that 4 times in the next two weeks.

This is a Live Blog, bitches.

LGRW.  You just got in.  You just beat Anaheim.  Now take what's yours.

This is one of those games where, save for Brunner and maybe Nyquist, nobody else did anything of actual substance.

BS.  Hank and Pav played well.  The third line played well.  What’s left?

Ugly game.

Hopefully, it is a case of DET being gassed.

Because if CHI play this way every game - - it’ll be over really damn quick.

Ah empty net goals are for pussies.

Will have a better effort next game.

Yup, we dropped Game 1 against Anaheim and that series turned out OK.  Plus, we CAN skate with this team.  Now, it’s up to coach Babs to work on how to beat the press.

Need I remind everyone this is Game 1, in CHI?  This isn’t DET losing home ice already.

I know, it sounds sunshine and unicorns and all but, seriously.  CHI got very lucky to fight out of this game and take a 1-0 lead.  CHI pressed more but…. in the end they relied a LOT on DET’s turnovers.

Let’s see where Game 2 goes.  If anyone but Brunner gets a goal, where the hell does this game end up?

I’m kind of shocked by all the positivity. You guys aren’t giving enough credit to the Hawks for how thoroughly we just got reamed by them. There’s no way to no yet if that game was an aberration or how the whole series will go.

No penalties on the Hawks that weren’t both players going off since barely 2 minutes into the 2nd, and that was a delay of game over the glass.  So really, no penalty call that the refs had to decide to make on Chicago since 16:42 of the 1st.  Wings didn’t have enough of so many things to win at the end, but the guys in stripes were embarrassing tonight.

Lots of players were playing in Europe before the lockout, and the shortened season’s schedule was condensed. 48 games in 99 days. A game every other day, basically. And the Ducks hit everything that move.

Not that it’s an excuse, but it stands to reason that you’ll become less effective the longer things go on. Just look at the first 20 of this game and then the next two periods.

Wasted effort by Jimmah.  D has to be much better.  Scoring, or the lack thereof, will be the death of the Wings in this series.

To be fair to the Lebruns of the world, a lot of our players did play elsewhere during Bettman’s Extended-Super-Happy-Family-Fun-Time.

Cleary has the spirit and passion, but physically is a shell of what he used to be. He looked like he was really laboring on that winning goal. How much more will he play before he hampers more than helps this team.

The Wings were not the only players who were playing overseas.  Sorry, they have younger legs this year, lots of guys sat out games due to injury or being scratched fatigue should not be an issue.  If you want to say the Wings peaked last round, I may buy that, fatigue I don’t.

Jeebus, smith can’t even make a cross ice pass. Bench him

Bench him? If he keeps playing like he did tonight, someone may shoot him. As others have indicated, his decision-making and execution were brutal.

Imagine how different tonight might have been had DK not broken his thumb in what, at the time, looked like a rather routine play. Oh, well.

Really missing him right now. Would have been terrific experience for his as well.

Cleary (surprisingly)

Yeah, I thought he played well. Was hitting everything to start. Lost his usual amount of puck battles. But you’re not gonna get a complete game out of him it’s shown. As much as it doesn’t help right now, he did have a career year in 10-11. Injury + age I suppose.

Lot’s of hockey left. Babs better take a close look at his assets over the next few days.

.....after tonight’s debacle i’m having a very difficult time believing that smitty is better than white…the freakout quotient is so high with smith that it could create whole new branch of mathematics….coughculus….the lad must sit….and white will have to score a hat trick on jimmah before smitty gets another minute…..there is no longer an upside to smith’s game this season….this series is not a baptismal for rookies, and snakebit rookies for sure…..

....it may make no difference if uncle mike makes the substitution, but i’d hate to wonder if white would have been an upgrade after a sweep…..and please, no groundswell for lashoff….this series is far beyond his capabilities…..give him a year….as in next year….

...it seems that everything the wings were supposed to erode to were evidenced in this game…...

.....btw, did anyone hear franzen’s name mentioned tonight ???......that slovak dude, hossa ??..... kept hearing that name every two or three minutes…..sounds familiar, but i’m not getting the memory support i deserve….he looked really good….even has some aquatic skills…...

.....smith must sit, i repeat…..coliostomy looked like larry robinson by comparison…..

None of CHI’s core/top players played, save for Kane in Switzerland.  Keith, Toews, Sharp, Hossa, Seabrook, Bolland…. they all did not play a game anywhere else.

Don’t dismiss the notion, it may indeed play a factor.

Where does that game go without Smith getting brutalized repeatedly?  Honestly?

Hawks defended home ice once.  Now, let’s see them do it again.  That building was QUIET for over 40 min. last night for a reason.  Losing 1 game is not the series, if DET can take Game 2 we’re suddenly in the driver’s seat.

I know we’re not all used to opening on the road and all but, yeesh.  All you have to do is take 1 of 2, and even if you don’t you still have 2 at home then to even it up.  And while some of you may feel we poked the bear last night, I see it as CHI maybe now questioning themselves.

Relax.  Nothing is on the line just yet… unless you are CHI.

Exactly. It’s not the optimist in me that thinks this way. It’s the common sense perspective. As a
Wing’s Fan I’m not even supposed to be watching my Team in the second round of the playoffs, or, any round for that matter.

I’m just gonna sit back and enjoy the ride for as long as it lasts. Bitches.

Agreed. It is just awesome we are one of only eight teams left standing. NO ONE would have predicted that a few months ago.

It’s just that last night feels so much like a squandered opportunity. Steal game one, where the Hawks are not up to speed for 2/3 of the game, and everything changes. Even Babs told the press he didn’t like his team’s level of play.

Game one was very winnable.

People said the same thing about ANA though, “They’re not playing up to their level”.  And while I don’t disagree with that fact, what remains is that ANA never *did* play up to that.  Everyone kept waiting for them to, and they didn’t.

CHI is a better team than ANA.  CHI also didn’t play as flat as ANA last night, and well, if someone watched the game they know that the final score does not show how tight the game was for most of it.  Of ALL people, we Wings fans should know that outshooting an opponent doesn’t mean *anything* necessarily with the result.

Like I said:  Take Smith out of that equation and DET maybe (possibly even “likely”) wins that game.  Does CHI come out flying Game 2?  Maybe, maybe not.  Does Smith turn the puck over 17 times in Game 2?  Maybe not.  Was Crawford exposed as a bit shakey last night?  You bet.  Did DET get chances last night they didn’t capitalize on?  Uh-huh, for sure.

I am FAR from what most who know me would consider a “positive, glass half-full” person.  But I’m with you Kate, common sense and reason still says DET hasn’t lost anything yet really, and CHI isn’t out of the pressure-cooker yet either.

Yes it does. And don’t think I’m not disappointed by the loss. I am. It’s just not that big of a deal. I remember the first game against the Ducks, and, we pretty much played the same way.
Adjustments WILL be made, and, this WILL become a series that no one counted on.
