Can We Start This Day Over?

Holland announce Zetterberg out at least 2 weeks with a herniated disc, plus Datsyuk is not skating today.

Bertuzzi may be back tomorrow is the only positive news today.

If there every was a time for Weiss to break out of his slump, this is the time.

added 11:39am, via Khan tweets,

Looks will Franzen will return to center to replace Zetterberg on line with Nyquist and Bertuzzi. Other lines the same in practice.

And the other lines are 8-43-11, 20-18-21, 71-90-37. D pairs the same: 52-55, 27-2, 23-4

added 11:55am, via St. James tweet,

Henrik Zetterberg (hernia) said he doesn't expect even to practice for 2 weeks.

I half expect to hear Holland say that he has come to terms with Cleary on the three year extension he will sign in January.

Thank goodness we’ve got that 5mil/yr “stud” 2nd line center to take over in emergencies like this.

We can’t possibly keep Weiss playing 4th line minutes with Cleary and Sammy in this situation, can we? As dreadful as his production has been so far this season (though his play has been improving), he has to slot into the top 6, especially with Bert still out.

interesting and probably is our best true 4th line center option.

so I know there’s no more reentry waivers but will he have to be re-waived to be sent back down?

also, there’s obviously no cap issues with this move? does this mean Pav’s getting put on LTIR or do we just have the space?

the cap has become like taxes for me. It seems easy on the surface until I actually try to apply it and then I quickly have no idea what’s going on grin

Hank has had back problems in the past… The last time he injured it, he was out for most of a season.  Do not expect him back in 2 weeks.
Will he need surgery?

How long was Helm out, and he did NOT have a ruptured disc!

Holland is probably glad he has had too many forwards on his roster….

Will Hank play in the Olympics?  Doubt it.

I have always been amazed at how little Hank Zetterberg has held up against the pounding he takes day in, day out.

cool mad

Who else would you play with him at this point? Helm pretty much took 2nd line center job from Weiss. And we don’t have better wingers outside of Sammy and Cleary without breaking up Miller/Andersson/Tatar line, which has been pretty good lately.

Got to stick Weiss between Nyqyuist and Franzen.  Emmerton can be saddled with a rapidly deteriorating Danny Cleary and Samuelsson.  Weiss should find playing between two motivated wings who are not close to going to hospice a reprieve.  It would be rather stupid to breakup the current “second” and “third” lines as they have chemistry and seem to be working together.  In addition, both Nyquist and Franzen can play dump and chase hockey, and that is the game that Weiss is used to playing.

That wasn’t all his back, but a big part of the problem with Helm was that he kept trying to ramp up his exercises too quickly.

That’s why Z said he’s just going to be resting it for two weeks.

When was this exactly ? Z missed 19 games in the ‘06-07 season, he has missed 24 games in the last six plus seasons until now.

mckeeper:

Lower back pain is something captain Henrik Zetterberg has lived with throughout his NHL career, but the herniated disc that will keep him off of the ice for the next fortnight is an all together different then the disc that forced him to miss significant time during the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons.

“It’s similar spot, not the same disc,” said a somber Zetterberg as he spoke to the media Tuesday. “Hopefully I’ll be back sooner than last time. The thing is we just have to see. We’re going to take a couple of weeks here and then come back and evaluate it again and see if it’s going the right way.”

19 games is not most of a season.  In fact, it’s not even halfway to “most of a season.”

In the The 2006-07 season, the Red Wings lost a tiebreaker for the President’s trophy to the Buffalo Sabres with 113 points. They sat Z because they didn’t have a need for him in the coast to the playoffs. He played all 18 playoff games that postseason and scored 14 points.

In 2007-08, he missed seven games.  I don’t qualify that as “significant time”.

You’re badly overblowing this.

Thanks JJ
w2j2, i am well aware that Z has missed time on occasion with back issues. My point is the number of games missed is significantly less than “most of a season” as your post indicated.
