from Scott Burnside of The Athletic,

...here’s a look at where teams stand now in relation to where they finished the season and what it all might mean for next season.

Detroit Red Wings: C

In: Steve Yzerman (GM), Moritz Seider, Patrik Nemeth, Valtteri Filppula, Calvin Pickard

Out: Thomas Vanek, Niklas Kronwall (likely), Luke Witkowski

It’s unlikely Moritz Seider, the sixth pick in the draft, will be in Red Wing red come the fall, but he’s notable because new GM Steve Yzerman passed up on some high-end offensive talent to take the German defender. The pick suggests there aren’t going to be any quick fixes for the Red Wings, who have now missed the playoffs in three straight years. I like the add of Patrik Nemeth on a two-year deal with a $3 million cap hit. Nemeth, 27, brings some size and stability to the back end where there remains a bit of an aging logjam with veteran pieces like Jonathan Ericsson, Trevor Daley and Mike Green still under contract for the coming season. Their future with the team remains fluid especially as we get closer to the trade deadline next season when the Wings are expected once again to be sellers. Repatriating Valtteri Filppula should be a boon to the bevy of emerging young forwards on the Red Wing roster, although at age 35 he certainly won’t make this squad any faster and shouldn’t be counted on much for offensive production.

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

Yzerman said every veteran under contract is projected to be ready for September’s training camp, including defenseman Mike Green, who battled a virus last season, and defensemen Trevor Daley and Jonathan Ericsson, both of whom missed significant time injured. Yzerman said at the NHL draft he’d let veteran defenseman Niklas Kronwall have the whole summer to decide whether to retire or return. That decision could play into whether Yzerman looks elsewhere to bolster the blue line.

“We’d weigh adding another one versus leaving a spot for one of our younger guys on the roster,” Yzerman said. “If the right player at the right contract comes along, we would consider signing another one.”

Yzerman has stressed he wants players to compete for jobs, and director of European scouting Hakan Andersson said at the draft that perceived competitiveness was a key factor as the Wings made their selections. Young players such as Filip Zadina, Michael Rasmussen and Evgeny Svechnikov will get a job if they earn one, regardless of summer signings.

“Even if we were to sign another player, we still are in a position that those young guys, if they are ready to play, they’re going to push somebody out and we’ll deal with it at that time,” Yzerman said. “Whether we sign another forward or defenseman, it does not box out any of young players. What it does is it gives us a little protection if they’re not ready to go in the fall.”

Hopefully he’s true to his word.

i was initially pretty surprised by the signings of Flip and Nemeth, but now I can see why it was done.
Kronner is likely done and the chances that Big E, Daley, and Green can stay healthy for a full season is slim to none.

I’m not expecting this team to be any good any time soon.  I’m hoping for a top 5 pick, top 3 would be great, but a crap shoot with the lottery system.

I’d be thrilled if Zadina and Svetch make the wings out of camp….  less excited about Ras.  Wouldn’t hurt my feelings if Ras stayed down in GR for a year and hopefully work on his strength and toughness (meanness) in the AHL.  For a dude his size, he plays like a pussycat.

Then play McIlrath and Lashoff if you don’t want to play the kids.  Isn’t that why they’re there on a contract with DET?  DET can be bad with them in the lineup just fine.

While I understand the honing of skills at the AHL level, the resigning of Blashill was to develop the kids. So you might say, no that means he’s able to work with the kids after they’re NHL ready. This is for real at the NHL level, we will have in some cases better players in the AHL than the NHL. Admittedly our defense is poor, but equally because of game strategy rather than players. Anytime at 5v5 you allow the opposing team to dictate play in your zone without challenging for possession as if they were on the power play that’s game strategy and it’s been around actually before Blashill but is a trademark of his coaching style, along with shifting his players to the puck side of the ice along the boards leaving passing lanes wide openfor easy goals. If this continues we need to put Blashill back in GR until he’s NHL ready. Maybe Stevie doesn’t want to lose anyone good at expansion. Too many NTCs to protect.

Thanks, forgot what its like to have a 3rd line center that can get behind a d-man and finish at the net (having seen Nielsen and Helm so much).
