Another Opportunity For Athanasiou And Bertuzzi

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

Andreas Athanasiou will be given a chance to make up minutes in his next assignment. Tyler Bertuzzi could also see his time expand.

As the Detroit Red Wings prepare to play at Tampa Bay Thursday, coach Jeff Blashill has Athanasiou back playing with Dylan Larkin, and is mulling a bigger role for Bertuzzi on the power play.

Athanasiou played just one shift in the third period of Tuesday’s 2-1 victory over Anaheim, the result of the Ducks opting to play just three lines and Athanasiou not generating enough offensively through 40 minutes. Blashill made sure Wednesday that Athanasiou knew it was a short benching.

“I talked to him real quick, just said I didn’t think he was going last night, and he’s going to get a chance to go in Tampa,” Blashills said. “I told him get right back on the horse against Tampa. We need him to be a real good player so hopefully he comes out and he’s flying against Tampa.

Why not give Frk some second line minutes once in awhile? Set of 3 minutes a night on the 4th. He was fairly effective with Larkin at the beginning of the season and Blash never went back to it.

This PP needs some major adjustments, it’s been a real disaster for 2 months now and not getting any better.

I’m in effect benching you for tonight due to my line matching…..but don’t worry I’ll need your speed tomorrow against Tampa…..  sick

I wonder why our young players progress slowly, or worse…regress….

What a bizarre development plan for AA.

Today we’re using you as a top 6 winger. Expect to play 16-18 minutes

Tomorrow you’ll be a 4th line center and partnered with two other rookies on your wing. Expect 8-9 minutes.

Hmm, you guys apparently sucked. But don’t worry. You’re back as a top 6 winger again. So don’t think about all of those additional responsibilities of a centre. Just focus on the wing.

Umm, yeah maybe we’ll try you as a 4C again. Do you remember all of the additional responsibilities that come with that? Make sure you come down low and support your d-men in the breakout.

Oh wait, let’s try you on the wing again.

Hmm, and then we wonder why AA sometimes struggles with consistency? Meanwhile, Nyquist has played every minute of every game right alongside Zetterberg. Must be nice to have a well-defined role huh?

Blashill doesn’t talk to his players. The cake is a lie!

Not getting into the “treatment” of AA by Blashill at this point, but AA has been below average for about 5-6 games now and like everybody else he contributes zero on a PP.

I’m so glad you agree with me that AA’s poor play was finally awarded with top 6 minutes. Hurray! Millennials celebrate everywhere by burning their PS4s.

oh man, remember when we used to complain about Gus not getting top 6 minutes? man, that seemed like 3/4 years ago….meanwhile, the guy who just joined one year ago thinks this is a new conversation and he is the only one who has noticed marginally good young guys aren’t just granted top 6 minutes even though this seems to work will in NHL18.

AA has been in a goal scoring slump and poor on assists because Bertuzzi, and he’s new but AA has set him up numerous times and B can’t convert and not only him. Frk has 5 PP goals, and as usual our PP time is wasted most of the year trying to set FRK up. Blashill put Frk on Larkin’s line and again that line wastes scoring chances trying to set him up. Blashill can’t leave the lines alone, and what’s worse is Blashill thinks his line blender crap works. No Anaheim played a sloppy chaotic hockey game just like us and we we’re lucky to come out on top, winning with two goals. AA fourth line center with different players, better on wing, leave him there. Keep Kronwell off the PP he’s a liability, DDK inconsistent. We do not win battles along the boards, cannot stop clearing attempts or passes made along boards like most other teams can. Broken record.

Hasn’t AA started on Larkin’s line every game for the past, like month?

You’re correct homers, but watch what’s happening, on almost every line all three forwards are around the puck trying to gain possession, mainly in the offensive zone and somewhat in the defensive zone. No one in front to field the puck. Seems worse for AA because of his speed other players are more in position because they’ve a little slower. Watch how are players congregate around the puck. That’s why we can’t score, takes whole team to gain possession and no one is in position to get a pass.
