A Few Moves By The Wings

DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings today recalled right wing Evgeny Svechnikov from the American Hockey League's Grand Rapids Griffins and assigned defenseman Alex Biega to the Griffins. Additionally, the Red Wings placed left wing Adam Erne on injured reserve, retroactive to Oct. 18, and removed defenseman Jonathan Ericsson from injured reserve.

Svechnikov, 22, has skated in three games for the Griffins this season and is tied for third on the team with four points (1-3-4), including a three-point game (1-2-3) on Oct. 5 during his first game since missing the entire 2018-19 season due to a knee injury. Previous to his injury, Svechnikov split his first two professional seasons between Detroit and Grand Rapids, notching four points (2-2-4) and eight penalty minutes at 16 games at the NHL level and totaling 78 points (28-50-78) and 131 penalty minutes in 134 AHL games since 2015-16. The 6-foot-3, 208-pound winger was also a member of the Griffins' 2017 Calder Cup championship team, in which he posted a professional career-best 51 points (20-31-51) in 74 regular-season games and 12 points (5-7-12) in 19 postseason games.

CapFriendly doesn’t list Ericsson in their transactions list, but does have the Svetch and Biega moves. Not sure what that means, entirely, but makes me think it’s more likely that this is a conditioning stint for E52.

Short conditioning stint Steeb does not require waivers.

Not sure about a longer term.

Never mind, CF does have E52 on waivers (which they keep in a separate list than other transactions, as I just this minute discovered).

Paul are you thinking this is only a conditioning stint?  When Ericsson clears.waivers doesn’t have 10 days to report?

Also, even if he passes through waivers he’s still on the roster until they send him down to Grand Rapids, and they can’t do that until he makes it through waivers, which means nothing will happen until tomorrow at the earliest.

If he passes through waivers they have 10 games or 24 days to assign him to Grand Rapids before they’d have to waive him again. I assume that if he passes through, they will keep him as the 7th D and not actually send him to Grand Rapids until/unless another D gets injured and they need another body to be able to ice six healthy D.

He doesn’t automatically get demoted if he clears waivers. They could still keep him on the roster.

The waiver lasts for 10 games or 24 days.

damdog…, I’ve learned long ago not to think anything in situations like this.

We may know more tomorrow after 12pm, but then again we may not.

Right, my point was that it looks like this is NOT a conditioning stint, since he IS on waivers, which he wouldn’t have to clear if it was.

Carry on!

Good point STEEB. BUT then again I do not ever remember these scenarios.

Yzerman knows Ericsson will clear waivers if that is his intent. So he creates a roster spot for now. smirk
