Time To Put The Kingdom Up For Sale?

That seems to be the consensus around hockey these days…that the 19 should come to grips with a stark reality.  The MSM, bloggers, fans of “championship” teams who didn’t follow hockey until 2006 and would have let their team move to KC without a second thought prior to that?

They would like each of you to just go ahead and admit that the Detroit Red Wings are no longer Hockey’s Greatest Team.  No longer Cup contenders, much less favorites.  Four points after five games?  Pitchforks please.  Grain alcohol.  Big women laughing at you at 12:58 am in a dive bar.  It’s all over.  Pipers are lined up, hands out, feet tapping.  Pay them for your success.

And look…look at recent evidence.  Just yesterday…

Hide The Kids…It’s The Unibomber and Satan’s Daughter At The Door

Note:  If you’re DVR’ing this game to watch later?  Let me save you some time.  Delete that bitch RFN.

We’ve got a spastic kid finally playing, a sociopath on the top line, two grinders sitting and a bunch of Wing fans talking about shaving their frigging heads for like six hours this afternoon.

There ain’t no use in crying, which leaves only one recourse when our Tuesday total drops to 32.

Ground To A Halt: Draper, Maltby Both Sitting

Let’s assume for a second that Kirk Maltby could, if necessary, play tonite..even with the Charley Horse.  If that’s the case?  When’s the last time we saw both he and Kris Draper as healthy scratches?

I could do the research on that, but my left temple hurts.  Me? I have no idea why Eaves (or May for that matter) is in there instead of Draper.  But I’m sure Uncle Mike has his reasons.  Meanwhile…we’re all looking forward to seeing Darren Helm’s season debut.

Khan(!)

“It’s been a long time,’’ Helm said. “I didn’t get expect to get hurt in camp, but it happens and you fight through it. It gave me an extra month to get even more excited to get to this point.”

Meech…Boarding…3 Penalties

Hockey Hall of Fame passes go to ITDeuce…and we had to go to the second tie-breaker (number of penalties the Wings will take against the Caps).

Hank from Buckets and the Tuz.  Kronner and Stu on the ice.  Draper takes the 19th penalty for a hook. Wings take 3 penalties and the score was 3 - 1.

Deuce…email address is on the starboard side. Send me your mailing info and we’ll get your passes to you.

Oh, and if we’d needed the third tie-break? It was 1-0 Chicago.

Rats…The Frigging Mountains Washed Away Again…Guess We’ll Live Blog

Was just informed I’ll be DVR’ing this one and watching it later.  Lodge your complaints here if you want, but I’ll tell you from experience….deaf ears is all they’ll fall on.

Saturday’s A Perfect Day For Pointless Rambling

A couple thoughts to tide you over before tonite’s tilt with the Ovechkins (courtesy of Kyle at BDS)...

These four lines, even minus Franzen, Hossa, Hudler, Helm and William Tell?  Still as balanced as any group of forwards in hockey.  And nobody has the kind of potential firepower in lines 1-3.

Henrik Zetterberg | Pavel Datsyuk | Tomas Holmstrom
Ville Leino | Valtteri Filppula | Dan Cleary
Todd Bertuzzi | Justin Abdelkader | Jason Williams
Brad May | Kris Draper | Patrick Eaves

Stop The Shanny Talk

He’s not coming back. Not for free, not for twenty bucks, or a million or a six pack of Busch.  It’s not happening.

Brendan Shanahan will never play for the Red Wings again.

Hey 19…Win Something

Update:  since the winner of the HHOF passes will most likely be determined tonight, I’m leaving this up top for the day.  Any new posts will be below this one.

Here’s what’s on the line:  two tickets to the Legends game in Toronto on November 8th, the weekend of The Captain’s Induction.  And two free passes to the Hockey Hall of Fame on any date you frigging choose.

Here’s what you have to do to win…

Out On A Limb Here…But This Sucks Hard

Vomit.

Khan(!)

Bad news on the Johan Franzen injury front: The Red Wings just announced that the big forward will be out a minimum of four months after sustaining a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Thursday’s 3-2 win over Chicago.General manager Ken Holland said the team has recalled Justin Abdelkader from Grand Rapids (AHL). Holland said he doesn’t know how or when Franzen was injured.  “I’m a little surprised because he finished the game,’’ Holland said. “He said after the game the knee was bothering him and didn’t know exactly when he injured it. The doctor said it was before he scored his goal.

If you weren’t shotgunning a beer by the time you got to the 8th word in that story, then you’re not my friend.

It’s Comin’ Back Home To You Now Bitch…A Win One Or Else Live Blog

So I did a little research today.  The kind we’ve become famous for here at A2Y.  And I found some tidbits I think you’ll find interesting.

Of all the teams that have lost a Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Finals?  None, and I mean none, have won more than 40 games the next season.
Of all the teams to have started a season 0-2, none have defeated the team that finished directly behind them in the division the previous season the first time they played them the current year.
Of all the teams to lose a 40-goal scorer, none have won more than 27 games the next year without replacing that 40 goal scorer with at least a 30 goal scorer.
Of all the teams to have signed a mass murderer, none have won more than three games the following season.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
