Melrose On Game 3

We’re big time Barry Melrose fans here.

Big time.  Naturally, he’s climbed aboard.

This series ended the minute Doc Emerick finished this sentence, “Richards is back on defense.”  A blink of an eye later, even quicker, and Zetterberg had twisted him, flashed to his left, deked and roofed it.

And Later That Night When The Ship’s Bell Rang?  That Was A Game 3 Live Blog, Brother

A muddy track deepinthehearta.  Sloggy and slushy.  Haze frigging gray and underway.  As it should be.

Wings win tonite?  Game, set, series.  Wings lose?  Start shoveling coal because we’ve got ourselves a Stress Train Special.

It’s a Game 3 Live Blog.  Commence your conversations.  The only mandate is juvenilicity.  I’ll join you when they drop the puck.

Updated 1940 EST:  Wanna guess who said this?

“We don’t think much of them on a personal, character level. We think that’s to our advantage.”

Yep. Turco.

John Niyo: Q/A With A2Y

If you haven’t noticed, John Niyo’s been ramping up the coverage since the Conference Final kicked off.  He’s been good enough to answer a few of our questions and his replies are below.  Great stuff from one of the Detroit News’ better writers.  See below for his thoughts on the Wings’ decisions when and when not to retaliate, Dominik Hasek’s mood in the room since Osgood’s ascension to the number 1 job, slushy ice in Dallas and more.

Strong Words From Terrible Ted

Giving testimony at the Richard Gnida trial in Detroit today, Ted Lindsay pulled no punches.

“He was the greatest machine in the world,” Lindsay told the jury of five men and three women. Today, “I see this vegetable and to me it just kind of makes me sick (compared) to what was the greatest hockey player in the world.”

Lindsay said he understood the chauffer had been impaired at the time of the crash. “People like that, they should be shot,” he said.

For The Love Of Sweet Baby Jesus…Hire Him Now

Remember what it was like to be reading about your team searching for a new coach, while four others duke it out in the Conference Finals?

Me either.  But, hey. Dive fans are right in the middle of it, those that are left anyway.

Sshhh…They Did It Again

Nary a word here about the Wings’ latest Finnish find.  Not much about losing out on the “next Swede” either. Both stories are taking a justifiable backseat to bigger issues (6).

But, if you’d like to take a few minutes to peruse something of interest, I think you’ll be rewarded.

Nill. Holland. Geniuses. Hired a Finnish scout didn’t they?  Yep.

Caputo Lays The Wood To Melrose And Cherry

Two things I wish: that I had more time to give this column the attention it deserves, and that I’d written it.  Pat Caputo, as you’ll read, calls Don Cherry a bigot.  Pretty strong term.  Pretty accurate too.  Caputo also reaches out to smack Barry Melrose around a bit, which is always fun.  Both “experts” have been very open about their biases against Detroit this postseason (and well before).

Caputo’s had enough.

Updated 0722:  John Niyo’s got a great look at the Wings’ “lack of toughness” too.  Great quote from Babcock.

“The 39 times we finished checks last night, I don’t know how much turning the cheek (that was),” Babcock said. “I don’t know if their (defensemen) think we’re turning the other cheek.”

Devastating Dallas: The Keys To Game 3

I’ve been giving strong consideration to using a Seger lyric as the title of tonite’s live blog, but decided against it. A few of you have suggested I go with a couple, more obscure Lightfoot songs.  I thought of doing that too, and taking full credit for the idea. But, I can’t.  The Wings are now 3-0 since we went with “Fitzgerald” and I’m not turning back.  Plus, I’m chomping at the bit to use a particular line and I can’t until the number reaches “1”.

On to the keys, the fact-driven, stat-backed, heavy-handed analysis A2Y has become famous for.

Fines But No Suspensions For Ribeiro, Osgood

Update 1932 EST:  Confirmed from Mike Heika at the Dallas Morning News.  He also says Ribeiro was “quite feisty today” at practice.  Twitchy too, I’m sure.

That’s according to Andrew’s Dallas Stars Page.

Sounds good to me.  Want more on Ribeiro’s antics? Read George Malik’s observations from Game 2.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome: wphoulihan@gmail.com
