One Week Later:  Readers Have Questions

The emails keep pouring in.  Thousands of Wing fans wanting my opinion, seeking my views.  It’s almost too much for me to handle. If not for the crack A2Y staff and interns from Saginaw Valley State University, I’d be in over my head.

Oh yes.  It’s time for reader/Chief Q and A.

It’s time to go…back to the sack.

One More For Gordo: We’re Gonna Live Blog The Awards Show

You’re damn right we are.  I don’t even know what time the frigging show starts, but I’ll find out.  Oh yes I will.  And we’re going to live blog it like nothing’s ever been live blogged before.

It will be riveting and it will all happen here.  Man, this day is going to drag.  The anticipation…it’s killing me already.

If you’re a new reader, lured in by our affection for Drew Sharp, you may not understand the “Gordo” reference.  One of the 19 confirmed A2Y readers, Ryan, has provided this image to clear that issue up for you.

Good Luck Todd.  Here’s To You Losing At Least 4 Next Year.

Uncle Mike with a new deal, and a big hole to fill.

St. James

Todd McLellan will be announced as the Sharks’ new head coach tomorrow, having agreed to a three-year deal. McLellan was assistant to Babcock the past three years.

McLellan flew to San Jose this weekend, and two days worth of interviews with general manager Doug Wilson went so well McLellan cancelled a meeting he had scheduled for later this week for the job in Atlanta.

And a classic quote from Uncle Mike on the occasion of his little buddy’s hiring.

“He’s more than prepared to be a head coach in the league. (Fellow assistant) Paul MacLean is the same way,’’ Babcock said earlier today, prior to the hiring. “We’ll find some other workaholic that loves hockey and hire him.’‘

Stop What You’re Doing

A concerned reader sent this to me today.  It’s important that you see it.

Note to Ollie Jokinen:  Come to Detroit, my friend.  You have my word, you’ll never have to do anything like this again.

Oh, and if you’re still in contact, pass the word to the piano player that he may have made a bad choice this time last year.

George Malik Is A Frigging Showoff

There’s lots going on, so much of it. So much information.  Homer’s in surgery.  Happy’s on Czech radio, with AndrewinAnnarbor working sound engineer…maybe.  Writers have predictions for awards.  Babcock’s on WJR.  The lockout was a waste of a year because nothing’s changed and the hard cap the owners DENIED has been surpassed already. Thanks Gary. Ass.

News, news, news.  Go Snapshots.  George the superblogger has it all.

An A2Y Tribute To Uncle Mike

Updated 1148 EST: added a few MBCQOTD from ‘06/‘07.

Mike Babcock took the Wing job after he’d “failed” in Anaheim and after Dave Lewis failed (no quotes) in Detroit.  Lewis, who was hired despite Scotty Bowman’s strong suggestion that the team go with Barry Smith, was a nice guy.

And he was run over in the room.  Run over by veterans who were real attached to a style that was successful for them in 2002.

So in came Uncle Mike.

Uncle Mike Stays In The Family

The AP’s Larry Lage is citing an unusual source, and reporting Mike Babcock has officially signed the three year deal we’ve all read about today.

Mike Babcock is returning to the bench for the Detroit Red Wings. Babcock and the Stanley Cup-winning team agreed to a three-year contract, a person in the NHL told The Associated Press on Tuesday night.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the team planned an 11 a.m. Wednesday news conference to announce the deal. The Red Wings announced plans for a news conference, but didn’t release details.

Drew Sharp Responds

Two posts today blasting Drew Sharp for his dimwitted idea that the Wings should retire Dominik Hasek’s number.  I emailed him, offered him the chance to respond to the questions posted here, and he has.  As I told him I would, I’m posting his response in its entirety.

Your comments, as always, are more than welcome.

Despite the blogging bluster and the idiocy of Drew Sharp, we still remember that Dominik Hasek retired as an icon, and one of the best goalies to ever play the game.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome: wphoulihan@gmail.com
