Abel to Yzerman
Stand by. The Columbus Bloggers are ready to host a bash and every single one of you is invited. Michael at Army of the Ohio has posted his manifesto on the event and it’s looking like they’ve got a handle on it.
Details: 22 June, Columbus, Michael and Drew from EOB are buying the warm beers (well…they’ll have to confirm that one), and the party’s open to hockey fans and bloggers alike.
In case you were wondering just how stupid Chris Pronger is, and really there’s no mystery anymore, Eric Duhatschek has his rap sheet laid out nicely for you.
Ducks defenceman Chris Pronger was suspended for the seventh time by the NHL Sunday. The previous six:
* V. Pat Peake, slashing, four games, 10/29/95
* V. Jeremy Roenick, highsticking, four games, 12/27/98
* V. Kelly Buchberger, leaving bench for altercation, one game, 10/11/00
* V. Brenden Morrow, crosscheck, two games, 04/03/02
* V. Ville Nieminen, kicking, one game, 03/14/04
* V. Tomas Holmstrom, elbow to the head, one playoff game, 05/15/07
And the first deep digger to climb out of his post-playoff hole is….Khan(!). That’s why you’re the captain, Ansar. After only 8 days of silence, you’re back with a vengeance.
The Wings appear to be making progress in contract talks with defenseman Mathieu Schneider. General manger Ken Holland said Friday that he spoke with Schneider’s agent, Mike Gillis, earlier this week and will talk to him again next week.
The club has made it a priority to re-sign Schneider, who’s coming off two of the best seasons of his career. And Schneider has said several times that Detroit has been the best stop in his career. So it looks like they’ll find a way to get a deal done.
Ansar also mentions the likelihood that we’ve seen the last of Markov. More here.
I think it’s safe to say that I’m still feeling the effects of The Fluttering Puck From The Gates Of Hell. Yes, the capstone moment of the Kick To The Groin. Granted, when I read blog titles like this: US Navy Assists Al Qaida Dirtbag in Search For Martyrdom, I feel warm inside. But, it’s not enough.
I’ve been inundated (sorry, Bubba…“flooded”) with emails asking me to keep everyone up to speed on the likelihood of a Smyth deal in Detroit.
Well, inundated might be too strong. Actually, no one’s really asked about it.
But it’s my agenda and I plan on pushing it. So here we go.
Well, the organ-I-zation doesn’t think you’re important enough to do so during the regular season in Detroit. So they, you know, kinda lock the doors to the Joe.
But hey, TC in September isn’t exactly a bad place to be.
TRAVERSE CITY — Tickets for the Detroit Red Wings training camp will go on sale Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Centre ICE.
This will be the 10th year for the Wings in Traverse City. Players will report on Sept. 13 for physicals and a golf outing. On-ice activities begin Sept. 14 and run through Sept. 18.
No word on whether you can order those tickets online or what. No word either on whether a certain insane netminder will be there to greet you should you decide to go.
Thanks again to WDFN for giving us season-long exclusive first rights to every Thursday interview with the winner of the Norelco Cold-FX Ponds Hand Cream Award For Leadership Of An Organ-I-zation Brought To You By Mark Messier and Depends.
And speaking of Chelios, man…new Wing blogger Jeremiah at All Things Red Wings is announcing his presence with authority. Today, or maybe it was yesterday…what day is it today?, he posted an in-depth look at the year of Chelios. And, I’ll admit, he hit on a key I hadn’t mentioned yet…Chelios’ LEADERSHIP of the Players’ Union.
Read it here. Good stuff.
So yesterday, displaying an ability to see into the future that is unrivaled and probably unnerving to a few of you, I predicted a certain degree of angst over the selection of one Chris Chelios as the first NHL Cold-FX Versus Geico Bigfoot Commercial Rodeo Leader of the Year Brought To You By Ford And Mark Messier.
But I couldn’t have foreseen the picnic basket full of pleasing cheddar that was dropped in my lap this morning.
This story is so good that I can’t give you just a few quotes. But, I’m going to give you two relevant ones, and hopefully they will be enough to get you to read the rest.
He’s so modest that during an interview with a reporter, he never mentioned a recent tribute from Chris Pronger, the ex-Blues captain now with Anaheim. Pronger invited Gassoff, then stationed in California, to a Ducks home game.
Bob said Chris had them show him on the JumboTron,” said Diana, his mom. “They interviewed Chris on the bench, and he said, ‘This is a great friend of mine, and he’s going to war.’”
Brett Hull is confident that the stick boy he once knew can take care of himself and his men. To the point that worries about Little Gasser’s current shift are almost misdirected.
“All I know,’’ said Hull, “is there’s going to be a lot more enemy casualties over there.’‘
Foiled again. By now you’ve all read Drew Sharp’s column from last week suggesting the Wings should stop at fiscally nothing to lure JSG away from his comfortable Disney surroundings.
The bidding might reach $5 million a year. It doesn’t matter. Get it done and the Wings remain serious Cup contenders for at least the next two years.
Might reach 5 mil Drew? Might? Sharp says quite a bit. Lots of words. Except two: salary cap. Have no fear, though, little Drew. Spector’s here to help you…again.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
