Steve Yzerman got some face time during the World Junior Championships in Sweden on Wednesday. Yzerman was interviewed during the second period of the Canada-U.S. game.

TSN reporter James Cybulski asked Yzerman if he’d thought about the ceremony to retire his No.19 next week. The ceremony at Joe Louis Arena begins at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 2, prior to the game against the Anaheim Ducks.

“I really haven’t,” Yzerman said. “I’ve been actually surprisingly busy doing a lot of things, watching our team play and then watching some of our prospects play.”

A2Y Administravia

Herringbone, blogger extraordinaire and new rival, pointed out today that "Mickelson" hadn't transferred over from the old glossary to the new one. That has been corrected, as well as a few other additions. Comments: those of you kind enough to leave comments lately have been disappointed to find that my response time to your witticisms has been less than stellar. I have an excuse, but I won't bore you with it. Keep 'em coming.

Lidstrom Overtakes Fitzpatrick

The fact that I wrote that headline says a whole lot about the state of the NHL today. Take a deep breath message boarders. Rest your fingers. Your cries of injustice have been heard. TSN

The journeyman Vancouver Canucks defenceman fell behind Detroit's Nicklas Lidstrom to third among Western Conference blue-liners in results released by the league. Anaheim's Scott Niedermayer leads the defencemen with 540,380 votes followed by Lidstrom at 522,345 and Fitzpatrick at 486,842.
I don't know what's been funnier: the Vote For Rory campaign, or the Wing fans at more than a few sites in tears over the development.

April in December?

I'm going to preface this by saying I was not happy when Brendan Shanahan left Detroit. I believe he was the heart and soul of that room, with influence equal to Steve Yzerman's. I'll leave it up to you to decide whether Shanahan's influence was positive or negative. Having said that, here's the bottom line: he's slumping, and with his demise go the Rangers. The Blue Shirts have lost six in a row. Shanahan has one goal his last nine games. Ranger fans are noticing. Blueshirt Bulletin

I think Brendan Shanahan needs a game off. He looks totally spent out there. He is being WAY overused.

By Popular Demand:  The Babcock Consolidated Quote of the Day

Alright…you asked for it. You shall receive it.  There seems to have been a popular response to our recent attempts to translate Mike Babcock’s quotes.  A little background:  Babcock babbles and rarely completes a sentence.  There’s your background.

So, from time to time, the A2Y research staff does their best to re-write his quotes for him in an easier to digest fashion.  Like today’s for instance.

“Sammy’s back, back with us, back tonite and could be back for the Minnesota game which is tonite..a back-to-back-to-back Jack.  Everyone’s back except for Kopecky who’s got the back thing. Well it’s really not a back it’s a collarbone so he’s not back, won’t be back until he says he’s back.  Sammy’s definitely ready to go, at least he was at the morning skate, yesterday’s not today’s.  Love the morning skate. Like to skate.  Everyone likes to skate around Christmas. I had ham for dinner.”

See? Didn’t that make sense?  Did he say that, word for word?  No. But…that’s how we interpreted it.  So, to answer your question Acid Queen…no, there will be no audio evidence.

But, there will be a MBCQD (Mike Babcock Consolidated Quote of the Day).  When?  Daily.

Fun With Chris and AlanaH

The best thing about the post you're about to read? Chris Chelios and AlanaH mentioned in the same space. I know Chelios is a fan of Canucks and Beyond, and I'm positive the feeling is mutual from AlanaH. So it only makes sense that we highlight their friendship as often as possible. On to the subject at hand. Chelios is David Amber's player of choice this week at ESPN.

Samuelsson Not Ready So Let’s Try…

I'm guessing Matt Ellis' stint in Hockeytown wasn't impressive enough to keep him there, because called up today to replace the still-ailing Mikael Samuelsson? Khan(!)Weblog

The Wings have recalled forward Josh Langfeld from Grand Rapids and he'll play tonight against Minnesota. Mikael Samuelsson isn't ready yet to return from his pulled groin.
There are a few of you who follow the Griffs (as I should). Please feel free to jump in with your opinions on this one, both on Langfeld's potential to contribute and the unfortunate shaft job Matt Ellis received...justly or not. Langfeld has 9 goals, 16 assists and 30 PIM on the year in Grand Rapids.

Keep The D…Change The Rest

Confusing headline, eh?  I like to keep you on your toes.  Here’s what I’m talking about.  Spector’s, the only true, credible trade rumor resource out there, mentions a Mike Heika article this morning from the Dallas Morning News.  In it, Heika says the Stars are in the market for some scoring.  Yeah?  Keep the D…lose the a, l, l, other a and s.  Put in an e, t, r, o, i and another t.

DALLAS MORNING NEWS: Mike Heika reports Stars GM Doug Armstrong acknowledged his club needs offensive depth but he’s not about to rush out and make a deal when the holiday trade freeze ends today. Armstrong also acknowledged the difficulty in finding a scoring forward with so much parity around the league as well as the salary cap making it difficult to move players.

Spector responded to that by saying the Clueless will be offering Tkachuk while Gretzky will be serving up Nagy and Doan before or at the deadline.

Yeah?  We’ll take ‘em.  I kinda like the idea of Big Boy (Tkachuk) rounding out the Wing lineup.  And you all know how I feel about Doan.

Wednesday Deep Digging

Last week the St. Paul Pioneer Press' Tom Powers said the Wings play "Eurohockey." I'm not that smart, but I'm guessing Mr. Powers meant the Wings seem to avoid conflict. Well, Danny Markov's European. And tonite, he'll be playing. So maybe Mr. Powers will have reason to mend his thinking. I think Mike Babcock, based on the caffeinated rant below, is pleased. Khan(!)/MLive

"Markov and Kronner (defenseman Niklas Kronwall), we need them both playing and playing good so (opponents) aren't comfortable, so someone's getting run,'' Babcock said. "You can't manufacture that. When you don't have that ability, you don't have that ability. When we have those two guys in, guys on the other team have to keep their head up. If they got two scoring lines, you got two guys on two different (pairings) that just might be hunting them down through the neutral zone or in your zone, which is really positive for our team.''
Yep. When you don't have that ability...you just don't have that ability

Markov In. Ellis Down. Samuelsson…Maybe

The Wings welcome back some grit, bid farewell to some character and hope to get some scoring out of another Swede. Khan(!)/MLive

Defenseman Danny Markov has been cleared to play and will be in the lineup Wednesday against Minnesota, coach Mike Babcock said after practice Tuesday. Markov has missed nine games with a broken hand. Babcock said he's not sure if forward Mikael Samuelsson (groin) is ready; they'll determine that after the morning skate. They sent forward Matt Ellis back to Grand Rapids, so if Samuelsson can't play tomorrow, Babcock said he's not sure if they'll dress seven defensemen or call someone else up.
Khan also reports Hasek will start Wednesday against Minnesota and Osgood Thursday against the BJ's. Considering Mike Babcock's recent tendency to lie to Ansar's face, that may be a vice-versa situation.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
